Caritas- Tuesday

It'd been one of the weirdest weeks for Kitty, who was still stuck in her suit so she could interact with the world and spent a good portion of every day now simply trying to be solid. Since Clint had a class today, she had an excuse to get some sense of normalcy back in Fandom, cuddling puppies and catching up on radio to see what she'd missed. And okay, it was kind of a relief that she didn't have to explain her absence to a lot of worried people here, but the fact that no one had really seemed to notice or care that she'd been presumed dead for weeks had her feeling not so great about being back, too.

And she'd been able to try and ditch that feeling by getting to the bar for her regular shift, and trying to figure out what kind of a disaster she'd left behind when she'd been gone all this time. At least that should keep her busy.

Incoming vampire! Prepare for tackle glomping!

Allie had woken up to a text (http://allie-vamp.livejournal.com/649.html?thread=541577#t541577). You'd better believe the first place she was going was Caritas.

"You're alive!!!!"

"It's almost like you're excited or something," Kitty laughed, hugging her back.

"You'd better believe I am," Allie admitted, giving Kitty another careful squeeze. "I thought you were dead."

"I did too," Kitty admitted. "It's been interesting."

"I can't even imagine." She took a step back and looked Kitty over. "What happened exactly? How did they get you back? Clint seemed so certain you were gone."

"We were dealing with this planet full of people who thought one of us was predestined to end their world, so they set a giant bullet towards Earth. I phased inside it to see what it was and was in there when they fired, so I kept the bullet phased so no one would get hurt," Kitty explained. "Problem is they had no idea how to get me back ever till a certain mutant with magnetism powers was able to pull me back. But my physiology's all messed up now."

Allie grinned,"Go you, saving the world." Then, more seriously, "Do they know how to fix it?"

"Well, this suit will keep my molecules from dissipating into nothing and killing me," she said. "Other than that, I have to basically re-learn how to be solid. Or it might be permanent."

"Did I hug you too hard?" Allie asked, looking the suit over worriedly. "I didn't hurt the suit did I?"

"No, no, you're totally okay," Kitty said quickly. "I can go into battle in this thing and be okay. And even if something happened to it they have ways to contain me. It's all good."

Relieved vampire was relieved. "Good. Because dissipating would be bad and I wouldn't want to be responsible for that. Clint would probably shoot me."

"He wouldn't," she said, and paused. "Did you see him at all when I was gone? Was he okay?"

"I saw him the first night, when he told me what had happened. He was pretty wrecked," she admitted. "I didn't see him after that, mostly because I was moping out in the preserve on my own."

"Sorry," Kitty said sheepishly.

"You're back. That's what matters."

And if the past few weeks were an object lesson in what it meant to care about humans, it was one Allie needed.

"Thanks. It's kinda weird being back, but that shouldn't last," she said.

Allie nodded. "You went through something pretty big and scary, I figure weird has to be the least of things you're feeling."

"The big and scary I'm used to," Kitty said. "It's just frustrating. And coming back here, where like no one knows what happened to me... Weird's a good word for it."

"Kaidan knows," she replied. "I'm going to have to call him and tell him that you're alive. He'll be happy to hear that."

"Tell him I said hi," she said. "Hearing that actually kind of makes me feel better."

It was a long day at work. Jessica needed to unwind. And an alternate version of one of her very best friends turned out to not be dead, which was a whole thing Jessica wasn't really aware of thanks to her own recent personal drama.

All in all, there were plenty of good reasons to hit the bar tonight.

"Hey, congratulations on being alive. And nice suit."

"Aww, you noticed." It was possible she was being about about the second thing, or a little bitter about the first. "How are things?"

"That's a more loaded question than you might think," Jessica said. "But overall, every day is better than the last one, so at least there's progress."

"Uh oh. Need a drink?" Kitty asked.

"Nothing heavy now. Two weeks ago was a different story and Tino probably had a nice night out with the tip he got," Jessica said. "I went to Battleworld and eventually got to talk to Doom. It went spiffy."

"Something girly where you can't taste it?" Kitty checked, and asked, "What'd he say?"

"That works," Jessica said. "And he told me that a huge swath of reality was destroyed. Like, enough that he and Doctor Strange thought Battleworld was all that was left. They managed to save a bunch of pieces of different worlds and created a new world out of it."

"Mine wasn't one of them. Pretty much like I figured, just on a much bigger scale."

Well that stopped Kitty mid-work. "Oh my god. I'm so sorry."

"Thanks," Jessica said. "But like I said, it's more or less what I've thought happened for a while. I just got confirmation. And hunted by a dog Thor. And attacked by dragons. It was a pretty sucky week or two."

"How are you doing?" Kitty asked, getting the drink finished to hand off to her. "You seem pretty okay."

"Not to be overdramatic, but my entire life has been one grossly traumatic thing after another. It would have broken me years ago if I didn't have the ability to take the worst punches and refocus on something I can actually achieve," Jessica explained. "So I'm focused on making this world as good as I can."

"I like that," Kitty told her. "Turn a super negative into a positive."

"I have an obsessive streak. It helps," Jessica said. "What about you? Kinda sounds like you had an even more excitable time than me. I'm guessing the suit's not just from this winter's Tony Stark Collection?"

"I phased a giant bullet through space for weeks to save the planet from being destroyed and now I technically don't really have a body so I have a suit," Kitty explained.

"... You know, between the two of us, I think we make a compelling argument for staying on Earths," Jessica considered.

"I am all for that," Kitty agreed. "Less destruction and terribleness, less having to explain things afterwards..."

"I'm ready to make the pledge," Jessica said. "Stop me if I'm prying too much, but what is the suit actually doing? I'd guess it's applying force on a molecular level to keep your body from discorporating, and that's why you're able to, you know, make drinks and stuff. Am I anywhere close?"

"Yep, that's exactly it. You have experience with this?" Kitty asked.

"That specifically? No. But the you of my world was one of my besties and I'm sciencey enough to get Tony Stark to let me build a portal to dangerous space in his shop," Jessica said. "If anyone's going to comprehend the basic idea of how that thing works right away, it's me."

Kitty considered this. "I don't suppose you have any way of knowing how to fix my molecular situation."

"That's really not my expertise, so I can't promise anything," Jessica said. "But I actually have an idea or two. They're long shots or temporary measures, but it's a starting point."

"I'll take it," Kitty said with a smile. "So far 'try really hard to be solid' isn't very effective."

*chokes to death*
