Luke's, Monday

The last time the island had thrown a weekend like this one, Eliot had proceeded to repress that crap way, way down and pretend it never happened.

Of course, the last time the island had thrown a weekend like this one, no one had any idea who Eliot had turned into. Hell, he'd barely even known anyone on the island, yet, and the only thing he'd had in common with the guy he'd turned into was long dark hair and a name. This time that was not so much an option.

"Heya boss," the cook said as Eliot made his way in that day. "So how --"

"Anyone says one single word about anything today and they're inventorying the freezer," Eliot said.

And that was how the Luke's kitchen staff ended up spending an entire shift working in complete silence.

Braised brisket with root vegetables
Latkes with spiced apple-pear sauce
Kugel with apricot nectar

Luke's was open.

Hannibal stopped by, barely looked at the board (it wasn't like he was planning on eating), and shook his head as he came to talk to Eliot. "An interesting weekend."

And of course, Hannibal wasn't likely to much respect a good repression, either.

"Nice to see you not covered in mud, Doc."

Repression was terrible!

"Very nice not to be covered in mud," Hannibal answered wryly. He chuckled. "It's possible we took our class to Bath this morning."

"Jake probably would have demanded details," Eliot observed. "I'm not."

"Tristan was simply glad to have someone who understood him," Hannibal said. "At least until Jake got so enthusiastic." Hannibal was amused by that; Tristan had been a bit weirded out. "Who was Jake?"

"A giant nerd." Eliot was maybe just bitter that Jake kept calling him a 'crazy hipster chef' all weekend. "Art historian, apparently. Extremely proud of workin' at a library."

Or, you know, the Library.

"Depending on the library, that might be quite the coup," Hannibal noted. "Well, perhaps one day I'll get to meet him. Glad to be yourself again, then?"

"Ecstatic." He sounded sarcastic. He wasn't. "Sometimes I miss living in a place where I don't have to be glad to be myself."

"It's certainly less eventful." Hannibal eyed him with mild curiosity. "Is that why you're considering not teaching next term?"

Eliot frowned. "No. It's not like I'm thinkin' of moving."

Hannibal shrugged. "You could be wanting to spend more time elsewhere, and not intend on moving," he pointed out. "And you and your partners could well have outside commitments."

A little unsure of her welcome, Kathy stopped by the diner, standing awkwardly just inside the door. Like she was just stopping in to check out the specials or something before she went on her way.

"I considered maybe goin' with a black bean noodle," Eliot said casually. "But it sounded like Lightning got around pretty thoroughly over the weekend. People mighta been tired of it."

Kathy blushed and ducked her head--but a smile was blooming and she took another few steps into the diner. "You wouldn't have made them right anyway," she told him. "You can't truly understand black bean noodles until you make a delivery to someone in a bathroom."

Kathy was very pleased that she did not truly understand black bean noodles.

"You know, I think I might pass on that one," Eliot decided. "How you doin', darlin'?"

That darlin' brought her all the way over to the lunch counter and her smile got an upgrade. "Not the weirdest weekend ever," she said. "Though waking up on the floor of the onsen was new and exciting. You?" She gave him a critical once-over. "Glad your hair is back."

Eliot ran a slightly self-conscious hand through his hair. "Yeah, Hardison and Parker ain't big fans of it short, either."

Which had been a big part of why he'd grown it back out after the last time he cut it off.

"Did help Parker figure out I wasn't just gremlin bit, though."

That and because it had looked absolutely stupid. Hardison had pictures to prove it.

"Were they both unchanged this weekend?" Kathy asked. She'd run into Parker as Lightning, but she never seemed to bump into Hardison about town.

Huh.

"Totally normal, both of 'em." Because that was fair. "Pretty sure Hardison's got some damning footage of the guy cooing over tiny horses."

Which had admittedly been kind of awesome.

Fandom just loved picking on Eliot. He made such a fun target!

"He was very enthusiastic about the whole island," Kathy said. "I mean, he was no noodle delivery guy..." She grinned at him. "...But, you know, he seemed really interested in everything. And I--she?--appreciated him looking out for her. And that he could speak Korean. That was awesome."

"He had a whole conversation in archaic Latin, too." Eliot was landing very firmly on the 'that was not in any way, shape, or form me' side of things. "About King Arthur or something." The details weren't lingering very well, which helped with the whole repression thing. "Apparently he was an art historian working for some library."

"A magic library," Kathy said. "I remember that much."

Her memories were still pretty clear, likely not helping her come up with a clear she/I distinction.

"An art historian that speaks a number of languages, apparently. Korean and archaic Latin aren't most people's go-to languages." And he hadn't spoken Korean well enough for him to have learned it for personal reasons. "Do you speak Korean?"
