Caritas- Tuesday

It was always weird, working on a holiday, and especially one where the fun stuff happened outside and you were inside. But because Kitty was a grown up, she'd suck it up and deal with missing out.

She's serious about the sparklers.

But she will make sure it's out before you actually drink from it because someone does not want to get sued.

Liam was not avoiding the fireworks, exactly. It was just that spending years in charge of the security of a high-profile alien being meant that crowds and explosive devices were not terribly appealing.

Okay, fine, so he was avoiding the fireworks. But, one of the people on the radio had said he ought to check out this place, so. Here he was.

"Hey," he said, sliding up to the bar. "Can I get whatever's on tap?"

"Sure," Kitty nodded, already getting a glass. "Feels a little weird to put a sparkler in it, but that's no reason not to do it."

"I... didn't think you were serious about the sparklers," Liam admitted. "But I guess it makes sense. Kind of like fireworks, only safe for indoors."

"Exactly," Kitty smiled. "And I never joke about sparklers. I haven't seen you in here before, right?"

"Right," Liam confirmed. "I'm pretty new to Fandom in general, actually, only been here a couple weeks. The cranky-sounding guy on the radio," though honestly 'cranky' probably described... multiple people on the radio staff, at least during actual broadcast time, "said I ought to check out this place, so. Here I am."

"Well, I'm glad you did, because it's my bar and I like business," she said, sticking a sparkler in the beer. "I'm Kitty, by the way."

"Liam," he replied in kind. "And I'm glad to know who's in charge of providing the drinks around here, so that works out pretty well for both of us."

"I'm usually more on top of spotting new people," she admitted, lighting the sparkler. 'Murica. "Are you teaching or something else?"

"Teaching? Oh, no, noooo..." Liam said, with a shake of his head. He'd attempted mentoring once, and then she'd turned out to be a Replicant. So teaching was not even on his radar at the moment. "I got hauled into the Trooper Station on my first day here... and given the job of sheriff."

Kitty frowned as she slid over the beer. "Huh. That's actually one I haven't heard before. Congratulations?"

"Thanks," he said, for both the drink and the congrats. He took a moment to watch the sparkler burn, bemused. "Everyone assures me that this place gets plenty of excitement, but so far it's mostly been paperwork," he rolled his eyes. "Thrilling."

"It goes up and back. Sometimes everything's really insane for an extended period of time, or really intense for a short period of time, and then it goes back to semi-typical small town quietness. I think it's a way to lull us into a false sense of security."

So reassuring.

"I'm from D.C., and I was a- I used to work in security. So I'm used to a kind of constant insane and intense," Liam admitted. "Small town quietness is going to take some getting used to."

Kitty paused for a moment. "You know it's a slightly different kind of insanity and intenseness, right? You've gotten that spiel?"

"Well," Liam said slowly. "I know that not everyone here is from Earth. And that those who are all seem to be from different Earths. Which- just to check, but did the Taelons ever come to yours?" So far nobody he'd spoken to had said yes, but. You never knew.

"Never heard of them, so I'm confident in saying no," she said.

So far, anyway. She'd never thought the Brood would show up, but hey.

"Yeah, you'd know if they had, they're pretty hard to miss." Liam said, scratching his left palm absently. "Energy-based aliens. That's who I used to do security for. And they were involved in some... pretty strange things. So I have a pretty solid baseline for weird. I think."

Oh Liam. Standard science fiction television weird had nothing on Fandom.

"Oh, yeah, then you're off to a respectable start," Kitty agreed.

"That's good to hear," Liam said, taking a long sip of the beer. "... We didn't have real zombies back home, though," he admitted, with a nod to the band.

At least Nathan had made sure he was prepared to encounter that particular Fandom oddity.

"Did you have fake ones?" she asked.

"Something like that," Liam said with a slight frown. "Biological constructs called Bio-Surrogates. No independent thought or personality, just instinct." So no brain-eating or rotting body parts, but pretty creepy all the same.

"Huh. I'm actually a little more creeped out by that than by zombies," Kitty realized.

"They weren't supposed to be able to walk around without a human consciousness to operate it," Liam said. "Does that make it better or worse?"

Get away from the bar.

Where there will undoubtedly be fireworks on the TV.

I'll be off to a picnic for a few hours and then we don't know what we're doing so I'll likely be home all night.
