Miguel held out his bag of popcorn in offering. "So I spent most of the week as a spider. You?"

Ooo, popcorn! Sparkle didn't mind if he did, thank you.

"Here on the island, resenting all the lucky assholes who got to go skiing in Austria. Pretending that Canadian holidays weren't a thing, looking for a decent Halloween costume."

He paused a moment, then added, "You'd think that last bit would be easier for a guy who owns a clothing shop and happens to be taking a costume design course in the evenings, now."

Miguel barked in laughter. "Yeah. Nothing so far?"

"Nothing that sticks," Sparkle sighed. "I'm about this close to just giving up and getting one of those cheap dill pickle costumes or something."

Because if he couldn't embrace elegance, he could at the very least embrace 'fuck it.'

And then Sparkle was looking Miguel over thoughtfully.

"Oh, no." Miguel held up his hands, still laughing. "Don't look at me." He already wore a Day of the Dead costume far too often. "What about your boyfriend?"

"Leto? Nah, not his holiday and he doesn't live around here," Sparkle replied, grinning. "So you're telling me you don't like it when people think you look delicious?"

"Not like that, no." Miguel shook his head. "A sandwich isn't exactly sexy."

Even if somewhere there probably was a "sexy sandwich" costume.

“Not that hungry,” Miguel agreed, with the privilege of someone who’d never really realized how privileged he was until he ended up with spider DNA.

“...Have you?” he asked, a little concerned he was trivializing it.

Hey, he had eventually learned that privilege.

"All my life," Sparkle replied easily. "Trust me, there are times when sandwiches can look very, very sexy."

"Ouch. Sorry." Miguel scratched his neck awkwardly and offered more popcorn. "Not now, though, right? I mean, you have a business and everything."

"Not now," Sparkle replied, shaking his head. "Now, things are good. Like, better than they were, anyway. I don't have to worry about where my next meal is coming from, anyway."

He still sometimes had his little panic moments. Like when sharks went through his storefront, for example. But usually... nah. It was fine.

"Oh, good." That was definitely a relief. "So we can forget dressing up like food, right?"

It took Sparkle a minute, but yeah, it tracked.

"... We'll see. There's like a week and a half to Halloween, anyway. Maybe something better'll come up."

Sparkle wrinkled his nose at that one.

"That's somehow better than a pickle?"

Miguel laughed. "Maybe not, but it's better than a sexy sandwich. There's got to be some sort of happy medium."

White and fluffy. Delicious. Seemed to fit to him.

At that, Sparkle just grinned.

Miguel snorted. "Careful; I'm venomous. And I don't know if I'd trust people here enough to want to get bitten."

"Depends on the people," Sparkle replied, and then, after a moment's further consideration, he added, "and on the teeth, I guess. I mean, I've been a vampire around here before. More than once."

And his look-it's-complicated father figure didn't even need to be a vampire to have a mouth worth being concerned about.

"But really, seriously, I'll probably just end up going through the costumes at work again this weekend and then coming in at the last possible minute to pull some, like, frilly period piece off the racks anyway."
