Friendsgiving - Apartment Above Stark Industries, Saturday Evening

Well, it looked like this dinner party was going to either be dead or the strangest one that Tony had thrown in a long time, just based on how he woke up this morning.

But the invites had been sent and there was a catered turkey all ready to be eaten. And mama didn't raise no quitter, so here Tony was. Soldiering on through One Of Those Weekends.

"...oh god, should I have childproofed the cabinets?" he asked himself, staring at his completely not kid-friendly apartment.

Yeah, this would be a great party.

"Me neither," Alec admitted. "They call me a nerd an' laugh at me. An' Nana says I need glasses, so it's only gonna get worse."

Steve made a face. "They're gonna break 'em."

There was always a "them."

Always.

"An' it ain't like we can afford to get new ones when they do," Alec agreed.

"Can you hide 'em for the walk home?" Steve asked. "I do that with my art notebook or else it always ends up in a puddle."

"Yeah, but there's always the schoolyard," Alec sighed.

Steve groaned sympathetically. Little unsupervised kids were the worst.

"Get a buddy?" Steve suggested. "Bucky always watches out for me."

Alec shook his head. "I'm still the newest kid at Nana's house," he said. "An' I ain't so good at making friends."

"Me either," Steve admitted, finishing his bowl of cereal--or at least the marshmallows out of it. "Bucky's the only one I've got."

"I got Parker 'n Eliot when I show up here," Alec said. "...But that's really it. There was another kid in foster, but he got 'dopted when I was with my last family an' I ain't seen him in years."

This was a depressing conversation. He nodded to the bowl. "Good, huh?"

Steve nodded vigorously. "Think I could have some more, maybe? I don't wanna be greedy, though."

"Heck yeah," Alec said, beaming at him. He shoved the box into Steve's hands. "You can have all of it. There's more back at the house we came from."

He was going to owe Parker so much cereal when they were big again.

"All of it?" Steve said, goggling a bit. "Gee. Thanks!"

"Well, we're...y'know, friends," Alec said, a little tentative. "Ain't we?"

"Of course we are!" Steve said enthusiastically, leaning in to give Alec a slightly sticky hug.

Boys this age were always a little sticky. So that was a hug returned without hesitation. "Cool," he said, because you know, feelings were uncool. "Real cool."

"Are you cool?" Steve asked, looking worried. "I bet Tony has another sweater."

You could swim in three too, Alec!

"What?" Alec asked. "No, you know, cool. Like awesome!"

"Ohhh. I knew that."

He hadn't. At all.

Hey they were friends, which meant Alec wasn't even gonna call him out on it!

Even though it was painfully obvious that Steve'd had no idea.

"Course you did," Alec said, sincerely. "You use cool to mean 'terrific' all the time, I bet."

"I will now," Steve said, then blushed.

He was so bad at not telling the truth.

Alec laughed. "S'all that matters then, a'ight?" And held his hand out for a fistbump.

Steve stared at the hand for a half-beat too long, then held out his own fist with a "here goes nothin'" sort of look on his face.

Alec giggled and tapped his knuckles against Steve's. "You ain't never did a fistbump before?"

"No," Steve admitted with a laugh. "We don't do that in Brooklyn."

"You still high-fivin' in Brooklyn?" Alec asked.

Because what else was there?
