Groovy Tunes, Sunday

It was actually a pretty quiet day at the Groovy Tunes. Jono had his guitar out and was playing whatever nonsense came to mind, mostly just disjointed snippets of this song or that, or little riffs that he'd come up with off the top of his head.

The Silence was nowhere to be seen, and all the little blue men were off on holiday.

He'd brought Joni along, but she was curled up and napping whenever she wasn't batting at his shoelace.

Just a nice, quiet, comparatively normal day.

Well that whole speaking in his head wasn't natural. Of course, Mitsutada was wearing his tracksuit and had left his sword-slash-himself back in his room, so he didn't exactly spring into combat. He did, however, stammer out a "D-demon?" in surprise.

Spinging into combat would've ended poorly for him, sword or not, anyway. This was likely for the best.

//Nah, but I dated one once,// Jono said with a shrug. //Unless you're asking if we carry those. Then I'm afraid you're in the wrong shop, you might have better luck at th'Magic Box.//

Mitsutada caught himself and shook his head. He then pointed to his temple. "You are talking into my head and have flame wreathed around your face. If not a demon, you must be something powerful. I apologize for my ill manners."

He took a careful couple steps forward and nodded his head in a tiny bow. "Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, at your service."

Ah, newbies. Jono gave a shrug of his shoulder, not really volunteering what he was, but accepting the apology all the same.

//Jonothon Starsmore, technically at your service. I am on shift, after all.//

"It is a music shop, then?" Mitsutada mused, looking around the store. "It is my first time here, if it wasn't too obvious." It wasn't quite like the general store by the Citadel. But then, that was a good thing. "I am new to this island."

Jono was going to behave, at least somewhat, and not point out that the 'new to the island' part was kind of blatantly obvious.

//Well, then welcome to Fandom,// he said, instead. //And yes, this is a music shop. Recordings on the wall, instruments in the rest of this space, there's a stage just through those doors, and a recording studio downstairs, if that's your thing.//

It had yet to really be anybody's thing. In fairness, he wasn't so great at advertising.

"I don't consider myself very musical," Mitsutada said, shaking his head. "I do enjoy a good tune, though. Is there any particular group or genre that is popular here and... now?"

Smooth. Except not.

//Any particular one?// Jono looked faintly amused at that. That and the awkwardness both. //That'd be difficult to narrow down, mate. People's musical tastes are as varied as the people themselves. Rock is usually a pretty safe bet, though. Or dance music, I suppose. What sort of music do you usually prefer?//

If he knew the answer, Mitsutada would have said 'Rock with a saxophone solo, mainly.'

Instead he shrugged. "We listen to all kinds where I am from. One of my... friends has a penchant for idol groups. Anything like that here?"

[furnaceface]

//Aaah...// Jono scratched his head. //Sure, I suppose. You're talking about upbeat music with performances that are mostly about spectacle, right?//

Maybe he'd go rummaging for the JPop.

"Well if you're going to sing, you should do it with style, should you not?" Mitsutada said. "Anything worth doing is worth doing with style."

Jono wasn't completely certain some of what he'd seen of JPop performances really counted as 'style,' but Jono also had some pretty clear biases of his own.

And a fondness for grunge.

//Personally, I'd say the style should come in second to the music,// he noted, //but to each their own.//

"Well then, it sounds like you have an opinion or two on this," Mitsutada said. "What would you recommend, then?"

[furnaceface]

//If you want upbeat, let's try you with some...// He pondered for a moment. //Swing, perhaps. Or electro-swing. Not exactly mainstream these days, but enjoyable.//

"Electro-swing?" Mitsutada repeated. "That sounds... different."

But definitely in his wheelhouse.

[furnaceface]

//It is,/ Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders. //But then, it all is. Perhaps I'll start you off with some Caravan Palace, or maybe The Correspondents. See how you like those?//

"This sounds like an excellent plan," Mitsutada said. "And if I don't like it, well then I know where to come to exchange them." He chuckled a bit. "Thank you for your patience with me."

[furnaceface]

//I know you didn't mean any harm,// Jono replied with an easy shrug as he headed for the albums. //Probably a good idea to not make assumptions about what anybody is around here, though. Might get you into trouble.//

He turned a glance back over to his customer.

//So, have you got something to play a CD on?//

Mitsutada had absolutely not thought that far ahead.

"Oh, I do not," he said, somewhat embarrassed. "I did not bring much with me from Japan."

Not that he ever owned a CD player.

"Maybe someone in my house does," he mused out loud. "There are many men there."

//I'll tell you what,// Jono said, pulling out a few CDs and setting them on the counter before making his way back across the room, //I'll get you a portable CD player as well; I'll loan it to you for now, and if it turns out you want to keep it, you can come back and pay when you can.//

How Jono managed to stay in business was anybody's best guess.

"That is exceedingly generous, thank you," Mitsutada said with another smile and a little nod of his head. "You must draw in many loyal customers with such service."

"I shall not forget this kindness."

Jono paused for a moment, trying to think of anybody who he could actually consider a regular who he hadn't just given a job to.

... Nope, no dice.

//Ah, don't mention it,// he replied, giving a wave of his hand and pulling one of the CD players from the shelf. //I'll do a lot of things to share the love of music around.//
