Prom 2018, Community Center, Friday Evening

Sure, the extreme winter weather had come and gone, but it had clearly still been on the minds of those in Student Council when they'd planned tonight's dance, as the theme went in the complete opposite direction.

Welcome, Fandom, to a tropical paradise!

There were palm trees, of course... as well as giant tissue-paper flowers hanging from the ceiling and brightly colored cutouts of frogs and parrots decorating the walls. Possibly with a good deal more glitter than one would usually associate with such a theme, but this was Fandom.

Honestly, Hyacinthe might not have even bothered making it to prom save for two things: 1) he had found a suit absolutely worthy for a modern Tsingano lad and 2: he had a date too beautiful to keep behind closed doors, no matter how much he really wanted to keep her behind closed doors.

"You know, rinkeni," he murmured into Ada's ear, "if I had known it was going to be like this when I asked you to be my date for prom, I'd have told you to come earlier and to leave your dress at home."

"Y'don't like the parrots?" she teased gently, arm-in-arm with her handsome peacock of a date. She'd borrowed a dress from one of her cousins, once Hyacinthe had told her the theme, and for once had her riotous curls were pulled back from her face, and while that covered the more obvious scales along the nape of neck, she wasn't really bothering to hide the rest of them along her shoulders and collarbone. Sure, there was some light dusting of her own glitter to blend them a tiny bit, but she'd gotten too used to not hiding them. "But if'n we'd stayed in, we wouldn't get to dance, an' then I couldn't make everyone else jealous of how I got such a lovely escort."

It was obscene how much Hyacinthe wanted to bury his hands in those curls, pulling them free of their pins and letting them fall wherever they wished. That was probably going to be the first thing he did when they left, right after--or possibly during--he kissed her senseless.

Though having their full profusion over her back made a good cover for his hand anytime it stole up to caress those hidden scales on her neck. Which he planned to do. Frequently.

"Ada-mine," he said in a teasing whisper that in no way hid the undercurrent of desire, "believe me, were we still in the room, you'd not be thinking about anybody else."

A week's worth of phone calls were no substitute for having her close enough to taste and touch.

Ada just laughed, turning to steal a kiss from him. "Of course not," she agreed, eyes dancing with mirth.

"--but I would have missed out on this," she continued, smoothing a hand over his lapels. "An' that would be a crime."

"I would have worn it had you asked!" Hyacinthe protested with a laugh, letting her have that kiss and another besides. "For a little while, at least. And danced with you as well. I would be a most gracious host while attempting to finagle you out of whatever it was you insisted on wearing."

"M'poor Hyacinthe, trapped on th' island during one of its spats of mischief," she replied, because yes, Ada had figured out that it was a pollen week. "Gotta say, that's one I don't miss."

Look, Ada was an adult, female mermaid. She had enough of a libido without the pollen, and being afflicted with that while at home, without any of her favorite people, would have been torture.

Hyacinthe was pretty sure that Duncan would have volunteered for tribute pretty much immediately. But it wasn't his place to say.

"It has been the truest amounts of torture," he informed her. "All of my favorites have graduated and gone away and there's no one left who believes in fun anymore. 'Tis heartbreaking. I believe the dorms have turned into some kind of Yeshuite convent."

He wasn't pouting he was just...

Ada was extremely oblivious when it came to Duncan. There were bets going around the rest of the family as to if she'd ever notice, or if he'd get up the guts to say something. The Millers really were the biggest gossips ever.

She was just going to need to sweetly kiss that pout off his face. "Are y'going t' stay for th' summer, or go back after graduation?"

He hadn't been pouting! His lower lip had always stuck out that far!

"Haven't decided yet," he said, running a hand through his hair. "My mother and Phedre wish me to come home and I miss them, but seems foolish not to take m'lord Delaunay for all he's willing to give." He kissed the side of her temple. "There may be one or two other considerations to staying in this time for the summer, too."

"Don't gotta decide tonight, or even tomorrow," she said, reaching up to brush his hair away from his face. "B'sides, regardless of location, you're gonna have t' deal with me sneaking away t' come see you, since your summer is my winter, an' we don't tour in th' winter."

"Well, there goes my plan to sneak away and visit you," Hyacinthe teased, catching her hand to brush a kiss over it. "You missed the week before, when this place was covered practically to the eaves in snow."

Ada wrinkled up her nose. "Ew," she said eloquently, for she was never ever going to be a creature that enjoyed snow. "'S April. Ain't no reason for that much snow!"

"You quite nearly discovered a Tsingano foundling on your doorstep," he informed her. "The first weekend, there was neither heat nor electricity. I curled up in my blankets and felt like I was five again. 'Twas an experience I could have done without."

"You're always more'n welcome, don't gotta be a sad foundling," she promised, "--but especially during somethin' like that."

The trailers didn't always have heat, and it still got cold sometimes, both on tour and in the Arizona winter. And more than a few times food had been tight, and same with power in the generators. Of course she'd sweep him up and wrap him in blankets and keep him warm. That was what you did for people, if you could.

When all you had was nothing, there was enough to go around.

"I don't believe I would have gotten a portal in all that mess, otherwise I would have," he promised. "After that, the power returned, so 'twas not that bad. Though I cannot run to you every time things grow difficult, rinkeni. Otherwise, when would I leave?"

"You'd get bored, stayin' around us that long," she laughed. "Or tired of cousins trying t' put you t' work."

"Bah," Hyacinthe said, nose in the air like an offended D'Angeline dandy. "Put me to work? Please, they'd be begging for the Prince of Travelers to perform his wonders for the adoring crowds. Begging."

"One of the little old lady cousins would hit you on th' head with her stirring spoon an' tell you t' go earn your keep," Ada snickered. "Most of us might be impressed with your skills, of handsome Prince, but some of 'em have seen everything an' ain't impressed no more, not unless you magically stole a goat or five that wouldn't be missed."

"Do you doubt a Tsingano's ability to steal livestock?" Hyacinthe gasped. "I'd not known you had it in you to be so cruel, rinkeni." He leaned in and with his best 21st century impression added, "It's kinda hot."

"Ones that wouldn't be noticed," Ada pointed out. "Most farmers know 'zactly how many goats they should have, chavo, they don't got enough of 'em t' be careless with 'em."

"Though if'n it's cruel you want tonight..." Ada pressed up against him, leaning in to give his lower lip a little nip. "I'll oblige."

Hyacinthe shivered, wondering how much Ada would complain if they stepped inside, took a picture, and then he just carried her off to the hotel room he'd gotten for the night as a surprise.

And then wondered whether the picture was entirely necessary as well.

"You'd be cruel to me?" he asked, voice low and purring. "How?"

Ada slipped just barely out of his grasp, to slide behind him, trailing her fingers along his waistband. "You don't get to touch me," she breathed quietly into his ear. "You don't get to taste me. Not until I decide you've earned it."

Hya's breathing sped up and his eyes widened. "You'd not," he half-dared. "'Twould be cruel to you as well. You like it when I touch you. When I taste you."

"I do," she agreed, staying behind him. "--but I would, if you wanted me to be cruel."

"Maybe you have to sit still and be good while I have some fun. Alone."

Hyacinthe groaned. That sounded wonderful. That sounded terrible.

He turned, trying to catch her hips. "And would you enjoy it?" he asked, because as much fun as it sounded, it wouldn't be worth it were she doing it only for his pleasure.
