Demon Marcus, Sunday
Sparkle was antsy today. For a few reasons, really, not the least of which being that he was going to be heading to Coruscant tonight, partly to play buffer between Atton and Mical, partly because he actually found himself missing the place, and partly just because he was telling himself that he could. It had been almost two years since that thing with the Iridonic Horn, and if two years wasn't enough time to get his head around something that he knew, logically, probably wouldn't happen again, then he never would.
And he couldn't afford to keep writing off even those places that had been good to him up until some fluke caught him off-guard.
The other reason, and this wasn't a small one either, was the stupid holiday today. Which he'd forgotten about until he came in and some little kid wandered in looking for something nice for a gift, and he wound up spending twenty minutes going through cute scarves, kind of resenting everything. It wasn't the kid's fault, and so he'd been polite and helpful the whole time, but if any of his customers came in and asked him what he was planning for Mothers Day, he was going to lose it.
Anyway, Demon Marcus was open, and the end of Sparkle's shift couldn't possibly come quickly enough. Shit.

That probably wasn't a surprise to Sparkle.
"It makes sense though.

"Yeah. So don't, like, expect perfection the first try, you know? Everyone sucks at it for a while."
He didn't expect she'd stick with it any longer than she stuck with her attempts at cooking. But hey, why not? At best, she'd find a new secret hobby to keep herself occupied. At worst, she'd spend an hour swearing at her own hand and nobody else would have to deal with her in the meantime.

"I used to have a few braids dyed. And wear makeup sometimes. Then when I... woke up it just seemed like a hassle, and the styles had changed so much."
She kept her eyes on the bottle.
no subject
"I can't relate exactly," he noted. "I always kind of kept up on fashions, even if I didn't wear them myself. But coming here meant everything was new again, and I wasn't behind so much as I was all over the place, you know? People wear what they remember is fashionable, and I have to keep up on all of it. Here, you can wear the style you love. Maybe it won't be what other people are used to, but then again, maybe they'll notice and they'll like it. You'll get both. Doesn't mean you shouldn't wear what makes you feel best."
no subject
"I prefer..." she began, then waved a hand, not really wanting to explain. "I wouldn't mind having long hair again, but that requires someone helping me to braid it."
no subject
"There's the spa," he offered. "I think they do hair there?"
He was calling 'not it' and tapping out on that one. Much as she was trying, he wasn't sure he could spend enough time with her to do her hair without also strangling her in frustration.
no subject
"Do you think they could do it wearing gloves?" she asked, then shrugged. "It would take a long time for it to grow long enough anyway."
Not everyone who had done her hair had been 'it'. There had been servants too.
no subject
Sparkle shrugged.
"I mean, if you ask them to wear gloves, they'd probably wear gloves. You just have to specify up front that it's a cultural thing. I don't think they'd have a problem with that." He tilted his head. "And hair grows, right? Something to look forward to, that's all."
no subject
"I'll think about it."
She thought for a moment, then added: "About cultural things, I talked to someone who doesn't know about pronouns."
Actually, Amaya wasn't good at grammatical terminology.
no subject
Yeah, that wasn't quite the same thing.
"Oh yeah?" Sparkle tilted his head a little. "That must've been a... validating... talk."
no subject
She was going to be so disappointed when she understood that Amaya just didn't understand the word.
no subject
Sparkle shrugged his shoulders.
"Takes all types, I guess. Must've been nice, except for that lack of space travel bit."
no subject
"I... should let you get back to work. Is that holiday making things busy?"
She'd just choose some clothes on her own, trying to go with what she liked.
no subject
Sure, Sparkle cared. Sparkle also really didn't want to give her an opportunity to use one more person as a means to excuse being shitty to people.
"Yeah," he said, and actually ground that word out a little. "Yeah, the holiday is making things a little busier than they used to."
Fuck this holiday.
no subject
"There were a lot of orders for flowers too," she said, holding up two t-shirts in front of her.
"A good thing I didn't bring Issa. She wants to go out a lot though. I guess it's the warmer weather."
no subject
Sparkle suspected Issa wanted to go out more and more because she knew Seivarden would give her anything she liked. Spoil her rotten, really.
He shrugged.
"I mean, yeah, warm weather is great for that, even to cats. Find a nice sunbeam and lay down in it. Do you keep the curtains over to let the light in for her?"
no subject
"It's actually quite dark in the basement."
no subject
"Ah, right. Basement." Sparkle wrinkled his nose. "Well, then yeah, she's going to want to get outside. Not even being able to look out a window to see birds? That's rough on a cat. You might be able to cheat it a little by turning on the nature channel on TV and letting her watch things move around there, but it's not fresh air."
no subject
"I take her to the park sometimes. There is a dog she likes to play with."
That Seivarden put up with that showed how much she spoiled Issa.
no subject
Sparkle gave a fond little smile at that.
"It's the rare cat who likes to play with dogs," he noted. "I'm glad she's got a friend, though. That must at least get some of the zoomies out."
no subject
"I'd prefer another friend, but if it makes her happy. I think the dog distracts her from getting stuck in trees."
no subject
Zoomies was a perfectly scientific word! In the same way as 'toe beans' was. So not very.
"Aww," Sparkle laughed, shaking his head. "What's wrong with the dog?"
Not the dog, Spark.
no subject
no subject
... Sparkle could only imagine what Seivarden's idea of 'annoying' was, but he kept his mouth shut. No point touching on that beast.
"Fair enough," he replied, shaking his head. "I almost wish I had a cat here, you know? Then Issa could at least have another playmate."
