Community Center Class: Gourmet Foods Around the World

"Hello and good evening," Hannibal said to whoever showed up. He was dressed in a light linen jacket and slacks and a button-up shirt, no tie in sight. "I thought we would start simply, in case anybody wasn't familiar with the local food. And by local, I mean Maryland outside of Fandom. That means quite a bit of seafood and meat, for a start. We'll be visiting Nick's Fish House for dinner this evening."

He brought them through to an unassuming shack on the water. Anyone who had still thought this was Hannibal's typical sort of place would hopefully be disabused of that notion now.

"As I said, seafood is extremely important to the local cuisine. As are fried foods. You will find both in abundance here. The seafood is extremely fresh; mussels, oysters, fish, and shrimp are all prevalent, and crab is a signature dish. I understand this place also has a number of very good cocktails."

He led them in and to the table that had been reserved for them. "If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'll order several things for the table, and you may order anything additional you care for. The primary local language is the same as Fandom's, so you should have few difficulties."

Kanan maintained that if he was going to be living on Earth for a while, it didn't hurt to know more about the place. Especially since 'pancake Sundays' meant he wasn't exactly picking up on things from work. And so he was here, listening thoughtfully to the lecture and looking around the place.

Yeah, this was more like the sort of dining he was used to.

Hannibal smiled at Kanan. "I see you've returned for another tour of the world. This one via our stomachs."

Kanan grinned right on back.

"The first one was so riveting I figured I'd explore with my mouth instead of just my eyes this time around," he agreed. "I'm looking forward to this."

Oh, fresh fish and seafood! Seivarden had missed that, and knowing Hannibal, she expected this to be good. Or at least as good as it could be around here.

She was here for the food, not so much for learning about Earth. Having very limited cooking skills herself meant she was longing for a dinner that wasn't takeaway or something she had managed to heat in the microwave.

"Marvelous looking place," Jenkins observed dryly nearby. "What do you suppose is the beach version of 'hillbilly' called?"

Hannibal nodded, somewhat surprised to see Seivarden in this class, but he would take that as a mark of at least some progress on her part.

Jenkins had been around for an exceedingly long time, but he hadn't spent much of that time being out and about and social with anyone besides the Librarians and the occasional elf-filled vacation with Santa Claus.

And really, there were only so many tropical resort vacations a man could take.

So he was giving the local class on "gourmet" foods of Earth a shot. He loved a good meal, and it wasn't as though anything he tried could actually hurt him, after all.

"Mr. Jenkins." Hannibal nodded pleasantly to him. "It's good to see you here."

Honestly, Edward wasn't here because he had any interest in the food, he was here because Doctor Lecter's had been the first name he'd recognized on Fandom so far and he was curious.

So he'd be hanging back, looking faintly amused, and wondering where the terrible alcohol was.

Ah, there was a face Hannibal hadn't seen in a while.

"Mr. Kenway, is it?" He nodded to the...well, no longer a boy, he supposed. "You've returned to Fandom, then?"

So much seafood. So very fried. But very very fresh!

Kanan was avoiding the crab imperial on principle.

"... Gonna have to go with that seafood platter, it looks like."

Because a little bit of everything? Hell yes.

Hannibal nodded in agreement. "It's a good way of discovering what you might enjoy. Not to mention, it isn't entirely fried."

Honestly, coastal Baltimore, Hannibal was sighing at you.

Oh no. Was Kanan doing this to mock her or did he just have a thing about eating with his hands? Actually, Seivarden suspected the latter. She had ignored him so far, but when she heard that, she let out a groan and slumped her head.

This was when Seivarden realized people here ate seafood with their hands. At least some of the dishes were eaten with the hands. For a moment she looked horrified, glancing at Hannibal, then she stared down at her plate.

"I'll have the fresh catch," she said, hoping no one at the table would go for the hand eaten dishes.

Sorry, Seivarden; even Hannibal wasn't going to eat fried shrimp or clams with a fork, and good luck trying to break open crab without your fingers.

"Crab is a Maryland specialty," he felt the need to point out. He wasn't going to insist anybody eat anything, but this was meant to be a learning experience.

"An order of the crab cakes, if you will," Jenkins ordered. "They are apparently famous, after all."

He was also curious to see what it was that made french fries particularly Chesapeake*.

* The mun, a native Marylander, will bet real money it's that they're covered in Old Bay. It's Maryland. Everything's covered in Old Bay.
