It had taken some doing, including a run to the mainland, but mission accomplished. Kaidan closed down the C.I.C. early - most people had stayed indoors and avoided the heat during the day anyway - and hired a rickshaw to help tote things down to the beach.

Once there, he unloaded a couple large coolers, some paper shopping bags full of stuff, a pile of fabric - towels and beach blankets, mostly - a folding chair and a portable grill. He tipped the driver well and arranged for pickup later that night.

A large, colorful blanket was spread out and pinned at the corners with rocks to hold it down. The folding chair was opened, towels draped over the arms and beach blankets folded over the back. Grill unfolded, Kaidan staked the legs down so it wouldn't blow over, and circled the legs with rocks as added ballast.

Off to one side, he set the coolers. One was filled with ice, drinks, containers full of chilled fruit, some packages of ready-cooked brats. An assortment of other snacks was unceremoniously dumped from the paper bags onto a blanket next to the cooler. A disturbingly large container of glowstick necklaces was chucked onto the blanket as well.

The other cooler contained water-filled balloons...that were sitting on large, rectangular blocks of ice.

Peter wasn't a huge beach person, but his friends were here, so why not? He'd managed to dig out a swimsuit, though he'd probably mostly be sitting on the sand.

Kaidan saw Peter sitting in the sunlight. It took a beat to realize he wasn't combusting or looking like he was about to, before Kaidan dismissed that as more of Stoker's fiction.

"Peter!" he greeted, "Glad you could come!"

Less Stoker's and more the church's, but yeah.

"Hi," Peter said, smiling back at Kaidan. "This was a good idea."

"Thanks. Figured it'd be a good way to cool off," Kaidan said.

"It's been pretty hot, hasn't it?" Peter asked. He didn't notice it much himself, but other folks seemed to be uncomfortable in it.

"It is today, but it's more the humidity than the heat that makes it feel oppressive," Kaidan agreed. Peter wasn't even sweating. How was that even fair.

Hey, if Peter felt the heat, he never would have survived.

He nodded. "Hopefully it'll break soon. I don't remember it being that bad last year," he offered.

"That'd be nice," Kaidan agreed, "Until then, at least people have been reminded that we live on an island in the coldest body of water south of the Arctic. Might as well use the thermal sink of all that water mass."

"We also live in a place with portals to just about anywhere, if it gets really unbearable," Peter pointed out.

"Yeah, but apparently those can have some wacky not so fun side effects, if Kanan's bitching about gnomes is anything to go by," Kaidan shrugged, "and the ocean's right there."

"Also true," Peter agreed. "And I like the ocean."

"Little colder than the water around Greece, I'd imagine," Kaidan chuckled.

"Constantinople," Peter corrected. "Though I couldn't tell you the last time I actually went swimming."

...at least a thousand years? More? Honestly, he couldn't even remember.

Kaidan tilted his head, "You're not the first person to say that. Is there a reason, for you?"

How could people who lived on an island not be taking advantage of miles of beaches?!

"Hell's not big on beaches?" Peter said, blinking. "Since then, you mean?" He shrugged. "I just haven't, mostly."

"I'd imagine Hell was mostly beach, all hot burning sand and sun with no shade, and no water," Kaidan shrugged, "But you've been here for a couple years, eh?"

Seriously, people, beaches all around you.

"More lava, less sand. Mostly." And that was Peter, shaking off the thought of it.

"I'm just not much of a beach person, I guess."
