The Beach, Tuesday Night

Ino had sent an island-wide text to the beach: Firework party at the beach tonight!

She and Reno hadn't really had to do much past that. It wasn't a birthday party, or a surprise party, and the beach and the fireworks would be more than enough decoration for a spur of the moment thing like this.

There was pizza (of all kinds), chips, soda, and Reno'd been good to his word for grabbing a few cases of beer and coolers. She'd brought a couple of blankets and lawn chairs down to the beach for people who didn't think ahead to bring their own.

Groovy Tunes had been cheerfully ransacked (she'd left Jono a sticky note asking permission) and so music was blaring out over the beach, inviting people to come on down if her text message hadn't been enough for them.

Even if no one else showed up, it was going to be a good time. Explosions, music, food, and fun were going to happen no matter what.

Ino had a cooler in one hand, was wearing her bathing suit, and playing with a sparkler in her free hand.

Yeah, this was going to be great. She grinned up at the sky.

Hell yeah, Reno was here.

In a suit. Because Reno. But even so, he was kicking back with his ass in the sand and a beer in his hand, quite happy with this arrangement.

Even if nobody wandered by, he and his Rookie were gonna blow some shit up. What wasn't to love?

Hernando had almost missed the text. His phone had been ringing constantly all week as Lito tried and failed to contact him. At the last minute he'd given in and read it and been surprised by an invitation to a party. He'd no idea how he'd gotten included but it was a nice gesture.

He showed up in swim trunks, sandals, and a light cotton button shirt, carrying a towel. He hung out kind of by the food table, hoping to spot a newly familiar face or two. It was, after all, a small island.

"Yo!" Ino said cheerfully, lifting her cooler at the guy she didn't recognize in greeting. "New guy! Who're you?"

"Hello," Hernando greeted, "Hernando Fuentes. I have opened the new tea and art cafe on Serendipity."

She grinned impishly at him, her pupil-less blue eyes alight with amusement.

"You've only continued the tea war," she chided him. "Shame on you."

But she didn't sound like he really ought to be ashamed. Ino thought it was funny.

"I'm Iris," she said, "owner of Pick Your Poison."

"There is a tea...war?" Hernando asked uncertainly. His English was pretty good, but nowhere near a native speaker level. "I'm sorry, I don't understand?"

"It is nice to meet you, Iris," he inclined his head a bit, "I read about your store in the business directory. Perhaps we could talk sometime? I read you mix your own tea blends?"

"No one really does," she admitted. "It's something that Seivarden started at the Perk and then my minion Sparkle took offense to and he bought all of my tea to throw at people and Amaya offered Seivarden special order tea and it really doesn't make any sense, but having a tea shop on the island that isn't the Perk is likely to continue it."

She hoped it did. Sorry if that explanation wasn't helpful, Hernando.

"Sure," she said, sipping her cooler. "I grew up in an... unconventional flower shop. If there's something to do with plants, I can do it. I mostly made the tea for my own preferences, but had a few people ask about it and, well, it weren't no problem to make more to sell than just what I could drink."

Hernando took all that in with a small frown, "That sounds very silly. Seivarden has indeed come in for tea and seemed pleasant enough." The explanation was baffling. Throw tea at people? Why would one do that?

"Growing up in a flower shop sounds lovely. To be surrounded by beautiful flowers would be a joy, I think," he said quietly, "Your knowledge of herbology sounds impressive indeed. Most people would not know how to make a tea blend that tasted good. Believe me, I have met people like this."

"I like Seivarden," Ino admitted, "but I have also heard that she... rubs people the wrong way, quite frequently, and she and Sparkle have clashed since she arrived on the island."

Ino had yet to see any of Seivarden's rudeness in person, though.

She laughed. "I do believe you--tragic, though it is!" A smile crossed her lips. "The shop, the knowledge, all part of the family. We all knew it, learning from the cradle. It were beautiful, to be sure, but also useful. You, now, beauty is important to you?"

"Beauty is important to me," Hernando admitted, "I'm a professor of art, in Mexico, in part because I like to teach people to find the beauty in things. Like this island. It is unusual, certainly, but also very beautiful. It is unique, I think, in all the world."

Ino contemplated that.

"I hope you still feel that way after the first few times the island tries to kill you," she settled on.

There was so much to love!

"No swimwear?" she teased him.

"What, you figure I own swimwear?" Reno grinned right on back and gave his shoulders an easy shrug. "I think you overestimate just how much I brought back with me to the island, yo."

He'd brought the ferret!

...

It was a short list of things.

Bob wasn't stealing anything, but if there was the slightest chance at a good time, he was showing up.

"I've seen your swimwear before," she scoffed. "And if you ain't got nothing here, you need to go shoppin'."

What if there was a higher than slightest chance of a good time?

"Here for explosions?" Ino carolled.

"Then I need to go shoppin'," Reno replied, shrugging. "Didn't bring much. Plus side is it made it easier to make a place for myself in some random house, yo."

He was still kind of proud of that, okay. Just walk into a house and inform the tenants that he lived there now, and it worked? And one of them was the head of the island's law enforcement, no less.

He hadn't lost his touch, at least.

The day he lost his touch was the day he was dead.

"That was pretty impressive," Ino conceded. "I just made sad girl eyes at Jono."

Which was an easy way of getting things out of him. It really was.
