Turtle & Canary; Friday [08/09].

Well. Summer and Shunsui had had their sake and steamed buns (and far too many S's), and now she was coming into the store with her laptop and a big fat check to get some paper moving and seal the deal. And she wasn't sure how she felt about it, either. Sure, she knew she was eventually going to try to sell the store or at least pass most of the responsibilities onto someone else and actually leave this planet, this galaxy, this universe completely, and she knew it was going to happen soon, but she maybe wasn't expecting it so soon? But it was the end of summer, her ship was almost ready to go, all she had left was to find a location for her new shop, and now she even had the money (and it was a lot of money, almost staggering, where the hell did Shunsui get that kind of money, anyway? Did she even want to know?) for it. Everything was just falling perfectly into place.

And she kind of hated it, because everything falling perfectly into place meant that everything was going to be set in motion soon and she was not ready.

But she also knew she never truly would be ready. So all she could do was really buckle down, shut up, and get to work, because delaying the inevitable only just made things harder.

It didn't help that Apu was going to be sending the whole day giving her long-suffering sighs and glares, too.

"Don't give me that look," she said. "You knew this was going to happen eventually, and, hey, it's not like you don't know what you're getting into, you've worked with him before, right? And the store stayed in one piece under his watch last time, didn't it? He can't be that bad, and, even if he is, you've still got Amaya around, too, right? You know she'll help out if she can..."

He looked wholly unconvinced, but Summer just shrugged. "It is what it is, man. I don't see you stepping up with a big fat check right now, you know, but I'd be willing to take an offer if you got one."

He did not.

"Didn't think so."

It was time.

Janet walked up to the counter and said, "Hi there. Is whoever does your hiring in?"

She thought it sounded professional.

"I am! Turns out things cost money," she smiled. "I have references."

Her parents.

And you couldn't call them because they'd yell at her.

It actually made her less nervous than walking in with a job in a minute.

"I've worked in my parents' convenience store since I was ten," Janet answered. "You hired someone who defaced your store?"

"I'm an artist," Janet said automatically, and thought to add, "Photography, actually, but I can make a mean sign."

She didn't make the signs at home. Still. She could make a sign.

"Oh! I mean, I'm sure that's fine," Janey assured her, and added, "I am adaptable."

She was fine.

"I can start anytime. I could start tomorrow."

"Great," Janet said with a smile. "I'm sure we'll totally be friends."

...Or not! Who knew!

"Are you feelin' alright?" Iris wondered, when she wandered in to get groceries. "'Cause that Jello flavor sounds actually decent?"

And that... that was not usually something Iris noticed about them.

"I miss fish," Iris grumbled, since sure, okay, she was kind of terrible (okay, very terrible) at making healthy food for herself (granola bars were a food group, dammit), but she'd grown up on a ton of fish dishes and the inability to order in sushi was really terrible.

Sure, there was the mainland, but that required effort.

"But I guess if that's the weirdest part of this week, I can't complain that much? You? I'll take some of that Jello, though, sure."
