Caritas- Tuesday

Kitty has had an interesting day so far, and then she got in to work and found that there was apparently a suggestion box set up on the wall next to the bar, which was already starting to overflow with paper.

"Those are all yours, aren't they?" Kitty asked Tino, who just shrugged.

She took her spot behind the bar and started setting up, noticing the gremlin with a notebook sitting on a stool where it could watch her. At least the squirrels were inconspicuous.

It was going to be a long night.

"Not a ton," she admitted. "Depends on what you're into. If you're into the gym and ranges, you're covered. Ummm, there's coffee? And bowling."

"Huh." Duke considered that. "Well. I do like coffee."

It was a good thing he was pretty used to entertaining himself, huh.

"I'm surprised there's not more beach traffic. This far south, the water's practically like soup." Only in comparison to Maine. "Woulda thought the place would still be overrun with tourists."

"We have some events through the year, Parents Weekend and everything, but that's all through the school," Kitty told him. "Otherwise... I'm not sure a lot of tourists would want to come here for some of this stuff."

"Really? You couldn't keep them away back home. Possibly through an actual outbreak of mermen, now that I'm thinking about it."

So many of his childhood memories had just taken an abrupt about-face.

"It's also possible that part was actually a dream. I . . . really can't tell, right now."

"...Mermen?"

She'd stopped just short of telling him that could always happen here.

"Bunch of dudes walked out of the water. Grabbed this kid right off the sand and walked right back in. Dad said they breathed water." Duke shrugged. "Again, not sure that really happened. But, I mean. There was a lady who could . . ." He gestured vaguely at Kitty. "And apparently that's a thing, so yeah. Mermen. Why not?"

"I can't say it's not. Possibility," Kitty said, reluctantly. "We get our fair share of weird stuff, but it's usually for a reason, and temporary, and not as randomly horrifying as that."

[betterthanaplan]

"'Randomly horrifying' should be Haven's motto," Duke said. "Even when it is just the tourists and the yuppies making it that way."

[throughaphase]

Kitty tilted her head. "...You have mermen kidnappings in a place called Haven?"

“I think technically there might have only been the one merman kidnapping. But yes, I get the irony.”

[throughaphase]

"One merman kidnapping is still a little much," Kitty said.

[betterthanaplan]

"Just kidnappings in general, really," Duke said. ". . . Now I'm worried about what else I might be forgetting."

[throughaphase]

"I think you'd be forgiven for focusing on all the kidnappings," Kitty said.

[betterthanaplan]

". . . Again, one kidnapping." Duke tilted his head. "You okay? I feel a little like I should be offering you a drink now."

[throughaphase]

"Sorry, I thought you were implying that you were forgetting non-merman kidnappings," she told him.

[betterthanaplan]

". . . Admittedly, I can't swear there weren't more kidnappings. I feel like maybe a lot of people went missing that summer."

And then there was the photo of eight year old Duke at a murder scene, but the circumstances around that one he really couldn't remember.
