The warehouse Rey seems to be stealing- Friday afternoon

Historically this had always been a tough time of year for Rey, though she had no idea whether it would feel the same this year. There had been a lot of changes since the last holiday season she'd spend in Fandom, maybe it'd be easier now.

Or maybe it'd hurt more, so Rey had spent most of yesterday at the shooting range, since that was something she had to get better at. It helped to feel like she was actively working toward something. And today at least was training, which she was looking forward to, even if she still didn't entirely know what to expect yet.

She got to the warehouse early, running through the firm she'd learned last week with her staff while she waited for Anakin. She still found this one boring, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to make sure she had it down.

"Well, that's what I always called it," Anakin said with a slightly sheepish smile. "I used to close my eyes and take apart and put together my comm unit or my lightsaber."

"I've never tried that," she said.

"It's much more interesting than lifting rocks," Anakin said, grinning.

[thatwaslucky]

"Lifting rocks last week felt kind of interesting," Rey pointed out.

Due to stacking boulders with her mind.

"But the part at the end," Anakin said, smiling proudly, "where you had to think. This is that but with more moving, smaller parts."

[thatwaslucky]

"So you... let the Force guide you while you're fixing things?" she asked.

[sith_happened]

"Yes," Anakin said, nodding. "And while flying. And in battle."

[thatwaslucky]

"Those I knew. I've been fixing things so long it never occurred to me that you could use it like that," she said. "Which probably means you can do it accidentally, too?"

Anakin smiled. "Probably. That feeling when you just know something will fit?"

[thatwaslucky]

"Yeah," she nodded, kind of glad someone else knew that feeling. "I think Han figured me out before I did. I'm pretty sure that's how."

"He'd recognize it from Luke and Leia, probably," Anakin mused.

[thatwaslucky]

"Or Ben," Rey shrugged. "It doesn't mean anything. It's just... nice to have that little question answered, I guess."

"All Jedi can't do it," Anakin said. "Obi-Wan was far better with living things than technology."

[thatwaslucky]

"Is it a natural instinct thing, or something you can get better at?" Rey wondered. "I've only ever tried one thing with living creatures."

She was already good at it.

"Well, I wasn't immediately good at it, so I stopped trying," Anakin admitted with a wry smile. "It's a failing."

"But how good could you have been at it if you tried?" she asked.

[sith_happened]

Anakin smiled. "Not as good as Obi-Wan," he said, "but probably okay."

[thatwaslucky]

"I've never really been able to afford not trying to get good at something," Rey admitted.

Anakin nodded ruefully. "I got very, very good at mechanics from an early age. It was what Watto valued and how I kept my place."

[thatwaslucky]

"So you had to immediately be good at it," she nodded.

Behold his childhood trauma!

"Yes," Anakin said. "It was a better, less bruised life that way."

[thatwaslucky]

"That's terrible."

Which didn't need to be sahd. But it needed to be said.

Anakin pressed his lips together. "It was what it was, and at nine, I wasn't going to be able to change it."

[thatwaslucky]

"It still shouldn't have happened," Rey said. "The important thing is you got out."

[sith_happened]

Anakin's eyes were shadowed. "But only me," he said. "That guilt...followed me for a while."
