The beach, Saturday evening

It took a little bit of hunting -- it wasn't exactly yule goat season anymore -- but he'd managed to get himself a reasonably large straw goat to stand in for Krampus. The thing was about four feet tall, decorated in jaunty ribbon. Duke had put a set of googly eyes and plastic vampire teeth on it to give it a properly evil look.

Mike had come through with the pole to hang the thing from, and as Duke said, he had plenty of rope on the Rouge. Bonfires on the beach were a regular enough thing that it hadn't been hard to set up the pyre either. Octavia had provided a nice, wide variety of knives to stab with, and there was plenty of booze and snacks to go around.

Come one, come all, Fandom. It was time for some symbolic revenge!

"That's good too."

At least they'd thought not to do this in the preserve. Then they might've needed her for fire watch, too.

"Anyway, goat'll still be there later if you change your mind." Until the fire, anyway. "How's your week been?" Since everything.

Definitely no preserve fires. The teal deer had been through enough lately.

"It's been all right, I guess. I've mostly been checking up on people." Which may have been an odd instinct for an introvert who'd spent most of her life alone, but here she was. "How was yours?"

"Normal." By Fandom standards, anyway. She nodded at their surroundings - the goat, the snacks. "This took up some time in the last couple of days."

"And all of this was probably very needed," Rey nodded. As it turns out, it was kind of a wakeup call when you saw the onetime most hated man in the galaxy shaken up over something.

Octavia nodded. "For some more than others, maybe, " she said, with a very brief glance towards Duke. She would've suppressed the urge entirely if Rey hadn't been, you know, Rey. "It was a pretty rough time, inside the volcano."

Not that she, at least, had found it easy on the outside either.

"So I hear," Rey said, frowning. "It's a long time to be dealing with that, too."

"Four days," Octavia agreed, turning her gaze towards the straw goat. "And one of them suspended."

"I know. I'm confused by the people who weren't tied up and didn't do anything."

That was just unfathomable to Rey.

It wasn't particularly easy for Octavia to understand, either.

But perhaps something of what Shunsui had tried to tell her on Wednesday had stuck. Or perhaps it was just that she'd had to sift through her personal trauma from the earlier parts of this ordeal.

Either way: "Maybe they just didn't know what to do."

"I don't get that," Rey admitted. "Even when I didn't know what to do, I had to come up with something. Or at least try."

...This was maybe one of Rey's personal issues.

This had definitely brought up a lot of those.

"And what if you hadn't come up with anything?" Octavia asked, maybe a little more sharply than she'd meant to.

"I'd have exhausted myself trying," Rey answered. "It's always worth at least that much."
