Tino had been on the phone the whole shift so far. He wasn't saying anything, but anytime Kitty asked him for something, or told him to get off the phone because he was at work, he'd just hold up his finger in the "one minute" gesture and keep listening.

"Yeah," said Rosa, as she gravitated toward her usual spot and took that habitual glance toward the specials board, "no one wants to hear my answers for that."

"Now I really, really do," Kitty admitted after a slight pause.

"I should have known you'd say that," said Rosa, who was just going to blame it on being distracted. Which worked as a good way to change the subject. " it speaking weird, have you...noticed anything, lately? Besides, you k own, the usual. "

"Not so far," Kitty said, frowning. "Why?"

Rosa shook her head a little. "It's probably nothing," she said. "Couple missing people. I m EA an, we live in an interventional nexus, people come and go all the time, bit sometimes they don't and it's something bigger and I guess it just kind of has me on edge a little."

"A couple? I heard about the one from radio."

And she hadn't necessarily worried about it because sometimes people left, and things hadn't ramped up to anything weird yet.

It was the yet that was getting her.

"Yeah," said Rosa, "Octavia Blake has a brother. Who knew?"

Well, probably some people.

"Like I said, probably nothing, but around here? I just hope if it is something, we can catch before, you know, half the island goes missing in a volcano again. If it's not one thing with this place, it's another, and I think we've had it pretty easy since that volcano.

"Or this job is just making me paranoid. But I also overheard Duke Crocker calling someone a good cop and that's just..."

Disturbing to her core, Kitty, that's what it was.

"That's actually weirder than people going missing," Kitty admitted.!

"I have no idea who Tino even is," Danny said. But, after the day he had, he didn't care either. He did care about getting a decent amount of beer now that he was once again on this hell island.

"That guy," Kitty said, jerking a thumb in Tino's direction. "Tip for you: he can make a drink just fine but if he invents a drink avoid it in any way possible."

"Good thing I only want beer." Because cocktails were asking for a hangover and hard liquor was asking for him to be maudlin.

"Any special kind?" she checked, not the he seemed the super picky type to her.

He almost wanted to ask for a Longboard, but then thought better of it. "Whatever is local, I guess?"

"Coming right up," she said, sliding a bottle over a couple moments later. "So how's settling in going?"

She could make some guesses.

"Ha." Was that 'laugh' explanation enough of his settling in? "I guess it could be worse."

[throughaphase]

"It honestly really could be," she... assured? him.

[hatesparadise]

"This is a very reassuring town," Danny pointed out, taking a sip of his beer.

[throughaphase]

"It's crazy land but it's got its good points," Kitty said with a shrug. "Nothing's exploded yet."

Aside from the one warehouse where bombs exploded. But that was normal.

C'MON, KITTY.

"Oh, I got plenty of that back home," Danny replied.

[throughaphase]

"You had a lot of explosions out there?" she asked.

[hatesparadise]

"More than is healthy, yes."

Never go to Hawaii, Kitty. Don't do it.

"What exactly is a healthy amount of explosions?"

She was from Marvel, so she didn't have a normal number in mind.

And he was one of the only voices of reason on an insane cop show. "None. None is a very healthy amount."

[throughaphase]

"That's way too reasonable," she told him.

[hatesparadise]

"How is that too reasonable? I think it happens to be the perfect amount of reasonable," Danny replied with another swig of beer.

"You know," she said vaguely. "Things happen."

[hatesparadise]

"No, no, that is not the case. Explosions are not a naturally occurring phenomenon outside of, say, volcanoes. And even then I have my suspicions."

He said, living on Hawaii normally.

"Of course they're not naturally occurring," she said. "Though, there was that volcano thing earlier this year."

[hatesparadise]

"Why?" Please do not say there was one here.

[throughaphase]

"Because there's a volcano here," Kitty said. "A bunch of people got kidnapped to it back in January."

[hatesparadise]

Danny just let his head rest on the bar top. "C'mon!"

[throughaphase]

"We got everyone back! And then they all fled," she said. "It was newbie day."

[hatesparadise]

"Can I get, like, three more of these?" Danny asked, picking up his empty to illustrate his point.

[throughaphase]

"You get you used to it, I promise. And then you can traumatize new guys with true stuff," Kitty grinned.

[hatesparadise]

"When I get used to it, that means I'm a local," Danny replied, spreading his hands like the case he just made was untenable.

[throughaphase]

"That depends on your viewpoint," she told him. "I don't think I was a local till I had to get a Maryland driver's license."

...Three years after she got here.

Three years was also not doable. He had a career and family to get back to!

"My viewpoint is that of a person who has been kidnapped by a sentient, time traveling island."

[throughaphase]

"Or being used to it could just mean you're adaptable," she said quickly.

[hatesparadise]

"That is not, in fact, something that is said about me very often." It had taken him well over a year to ditch the ties in Hawaii.

[throughaphase]

"I'm trying here," she told him.

[hatesparadise]

"Okay. Okay." That was kind of her? For Fandom standards. "Is it an active volcano?"

[throughaphase]

"Not that I'm aware."

Which meant nothing here, really.

It was like you wanted him to have a meltdown, Kitty.

"I'm taking that as a good thing to preserve my own sanity."
