Midsummer Festival - The Beach, Saturday Evening

Sure it was a week late. And sure it wasn't even a traditional Midsummer festival because there weren't any games or people selling fried foods or screaming eyeballs in the sky.

But Magnus was pretty darn proud of what had been tossed together for a fun costume party on the beach.

With a big, mildly terrifying wicker bear waiting to be set on fire because something something Midsommar. He wasn't sure of the details because scary movies weren't his jam.

Either way, it would be good, clean fun!

Show off your costume! If you wore one, that is.

There was a proper Maryland crab boil provided by Duke that would be tedious and time consuming to eat. But there was also lots beer. Which made up for it.

Once dusk hit, that creepy bear was set ablaze. No one was inside, so no worries there.

Who didn't enjoy a good bonfire?

Paaaaaarty.

Freya's usual coat and hat certainly seemed like a costume by the standard definitions of dress here, but the shorts and T-shirt she'd gotten for yoga and Wednesday activities felt like a costume to her, so she figured it would kind of count.

Some people might have thought just the way she looked in general was a costume. That seemed to be the popular theory whenever she went exploring the mainland, anyway.

She kept eying that wicker bear, as well, with a note of disappointment. That was definite not the sort of bear she was hoping for.

But it was a good distraction from the fact that there were no familiar pointed hats amongst the partygoers as she'd been hoping for, as well.

Jaskier had 'borrowed' a mask from work now that it was, as far as he knew, his only source of employment now that he was blissfully free of teaching.

Bless his heart for thinking so.

But he was there with a lute like that one guy who showed up at parties to play Wonderwall.

Silver was dressed like a pirate but that was just an everyday thing, not a costume. He also knew nothing about what he assumed was a strange pagan ritual, but there was free food involved so he was there.

He was very curious about the bear.

Lucifer had... put on some trousers and a light blue button-up (no jacket and sleeves pushed up because he wasn't completely mad) after his time at the beach with Octavia.

He had not been aware of any beach parties that weren't the one Seivarden had essentially told him to host, so he was going to take this as a respite from that promise.

He was also just going to wander on in with a grin, because there was food and there were drinks and there were people. "Are we doing Burning Man?"

Well, Magnus was dressed up like Taako. Which meant he'd once stolen some of Taako's clothes. So it did not fit very well, but he was totally a wizard! You know, complete with pointy hat and a random umbrella he'd snagged.

"Hey! Cool costume? Is it a costume?"

"Oh cool! A pirate!" Did Magnus have to say 'yarrrr' after that? Nah. But he was gonna do it anyway.

Hey, they totally put up flyers! Sure, those flyers had been a little light on the details of said party. And he'd left them up to Mae. But whatever.

"It's a bear instead!" Because of course it was.

Honestly, Magnus. If you wanted to advertise a party, use social media like a normal person. Maybe get an Insta. Or a Tik Tok.

"Burning bear, excellent way to avoid litigation," Lucifer allowed.

"What gave it away?" That wasn't sarcasm; he did not yet fully realize he was a walking cliche.

He also did not comment on Magnus' yarr outburst.

"Was... was it a secret pirate?" Because everything, Silver. Everything gave it away.

Yeah, but that would involve no longer using his stone of farspeech. Also, he'd been burned by Reddit.

"Also bears are cool." Magnus was a bear, you see.

Astrid had been looking forward to the distraction of this party ever since her last letter from Ingrid had come in and, just as Ingrid predicted, completely taken over all the little folds in her brain.

She considered wearing the white kimono.for a costume, not exactly thematic but sort of all she had, but she figured all the expensive jeans and name-brand shirts Claire had gotten for her were costume enough, and the last thing she wanted to do was wrap herself in something belonging to her mother.

So she was there, doing a poor job with the whole distraction part by sticking to the edges, sticking to the shadows, with a drink and a quiet demeanor.

Well, Reddit.

Lucifer tilted his head. "Depends on the type," he said, "and the mood, and taste, I suppose."

He was not much of a bear man.

"Well...no, not really." He was, after all, the so-called pirate king. He guessed being recognizable was supposed to be the point. "But I could have had some other profession."

Like a cool guy rock star or something.

Also, Craig's List wasn't a Gnome named Craig who put up lists in this world. Which completely threw him off.

"Like a black bear versus a grizzly bear?" Oh, Magnus. Your INT modifier was so bad.

Magnus tilted his head to consider it. "Yeah, but it'd still be pirate themed, I think."

Well, that was slang in certain parts of the-- anyway.

"No," Lucifer said. "Where are your drinks?"

"By the food! I got a lot of beer. Like, a lot of beer." A keg stand was bound to happen tonight.

Yeah, that hat had definitely gotten Freya's attention for the brief glimmer of a second that it took her to realize that Sir Fratley would never wear anything quite like that. The rest fell into place rather quickly, and she felt foolish for her childish sense of hope yet again.

And then looked down a moment at her outfit, a chunk of hair escaping her attempts at a ponytail.

"Not exactly," she admitted. "I didn't really have much to wear."

She took Magnus' get-up in a little closer now. "Is...yours?"

It was odd for this place, but she could definitely see people wearing it back home, which made her instantly like it for the familiarity alone.

Silver had the distinct feeling he and Magnus were on very different pages. Which was not a new concept for him here.

"Are you the one who arranged all...this?" He guessed it was a party? Or a ritual sacrifice?

A party like this wasn't exactly Danny's speed, but he had nothing better to do tonight and it was probably best to keep an eye on things in case that terrifying bear thing toppled over and burned everyone.

At least that's what he told himself.

Beer and the tedious work of picking crab sort of called to him on the level of someone from the East Coast.

"Sonnovabitch." Even as he got fucking Old Bay in the numerous cuts from the crab shells.
