It had been a normal, peaceful morning that was so early it was practically the night before still. If one wanted to be specific. Or if they were still constrained by the tyrant of time.

Then a piercing noise sounded throughout the building as a fire alarm went off.

Because why get a good night's sleep when you could be dragged out of bed to wait on the tiny, under-worked Fandom Fire Department to come make sure everything was fine?

Look, you have a Bard around, it's gonna get loud. And usually sexy.

"Believe me, I know!" Danny was also doing his best at being loud, but that was all New Jersey.

"I hate this," Rey answered.

And she wasn't used to being woken up in the middle of the night where there were people to be crabby at.

"Love you too!" Liam retorted as he made his way over to her.

This happened sometimes when she got woken up in the middle of the night, okay? Luckily she'd been by herself when the wings came out, so no one except maybe a few poor hapless ducks had gotten hit with the fear effect at the time.

"What is --"

Oh, that reaction. She knew what that meant, and after a moment of frowning and willing away the necrotic shroud, her eyes reverted to normal and the wings folded up and disappeared.

"Sorry. I'm sorry," she mumbled, fidgeting awkwardly. "That happens sometimes, when I get startled, you know?"

TOTALLY NORMAL REACTION.

"I have always been of the firm impression," said Shunsui, with a lofty sort of confidence in his grin, "that the morning hours are truly the best for sleeping ♥."

And here he did have to pause for the sort of breath that used to stifle a yawn, all this talk of sleeping reminding him just how long it had been since he'd done any of that.

"If only," he added, "the people...and moose in charge of making my schedules believed the same...♥"

Then he eyed her with a playful speculativeness.

"You're not one of those so-called morning people," said with all the dramatic dread such an idea deserved, before the tone lightened again, "are you, Jesse-chan ♥?"

"Fire alarm," Liam informed her. "No actual fire, though."

This particular look of hers wasn't new to Liam, exactly, though the last time he'd seen it had been in uh... well, circumstances had been kind of worse, let's put it that way. So he wasn't startled so much as maybe just a little wary.

Beau just gave him an aggrieved look. "You don't even live here. Are you just here to rub it in, dude?"

Which, you know, she would kind of approve of if it wasn't happening to her.

"Well," Liam considered. "So long as it was a test and not someone pulling it to see what would happen, I agree. No report needed."

Jaskier was never allowed to meet the rest of Beau's friends. That was just -- that would be too much for the universe to handle.

"Maybe I could just go break the alarm instead," she muttered, feeling a whole new appreciation for Caleb's nice quiet Alarm spell all of a sudden.

"I'm trying to get new PJs," Jesse said dryly. "But thanks."

"Right," Danny said, nodding and trying very hard to roll with this. Because he'd been dragged into a murder investigation with Lucifer and this shouldn't be that weird.

But the awkwardness was also a thing that made Danny irrationally feel bad for having a normal, human reaction to living Meatloaf album cover art.

"Right. That's normal?"

Definitely giving up on pretending to be normal, here.

Hey, it wasn't his fault his particular physiology meant he thrived on very little sleep!

"I'm sure it'll be over soon?" he offered.

"I'm just hoping I'm not missing anything important," Jesse admitted. "My brother is-- in the hospital."

But she probably shouldn't have been.

"Then I would have to replace it," Danny said, giving her a disappointed dad look.

Karolina just responded with a whine.

No, really. She just made a noise, and that was it.

"If someone out here pulled that alarm, I'm gonna arrest them." He'd gladly write that report.

Jesse let out a little awkward laugh. "No," she said. "I'm definitely also a night shift girl. But that gets you a lot further in big cities that don't sleep than small towns."

No, but not toning down his chipperness was clearly a choice.

Karolina pushed her tangly hair back and away from her face with a slightly uncoordinated hand, and sighed. "Hopefully, yeah." Because she was so tired.

Which was why Jaskier was giving her a very doubtful look. Very doubtful.

Yeah. The wariness was understandable, given the context Liam had.

Yasha looked from him to the building, then to the people gathered around (and no, she didn't at all relax a tiny bit when she spotted Beau, that little sag of her shoulders was entirely coincidental), and tilted her head slightly.

"Is ... there something wrong with the alarm, then?"

Look, under the circumstances, he could get away with fading out a conversation with the 'I'm tired' card, right?

"I'm fine," Karolina insisted, after a moment with that look. "My girlfriend's not going to let me, like... fall over or anything."
