It was a new semester! For nerds, this was the best time of year, and also why Kitty was working on lesson plans behind the bar when it was slow.

Also because it was quieter than doing this at home around a toddler.

Rosa was definitely not at all being subtle about peeking over the bar when she got there to try and see what Kitty was working on there so she could definitely make fun of her about it.

But eventually.

"Hey," she said. "My class on Tuesdays now means fresh stories for you when I come in."

"Perfect," Kitty grinned. "Tell."

"Drink first," Rosa said. "Whiskey today. And you've got to share, too."

Yeah, Rosa, like Kitty was the closed-lipped one in this friendship.

"One of my kids transformed into her superhero form in class," Kitty said, getting the whiskey to slide over to her. "You?"

"One of mine put PDNY in my brain and I can't get it out."

But the whiskey might help!

Kitty frowned. "PDNY?"

Which would probably not help.

"Like NYPD," Rosa explained, "but not."

It just felt wrong, Kitty! Wrong! Like, sure, she got it, different dimensions and all that crap, but that was like a Brooklyn bridge too far.

"Like an alternate universe?"

This was valid where she came from.

"Yeah," Rosa said, "exactly. Obviously, I know it's a thing, but that just feels...wrong. Seems like a good kid, though, even if his universe is ass-backwards."

"Which kid?" Kitty asked.

"Fabio Medina." Look at her! Remembering and everything despite the very firm claims to the contrary! Rosa snorted. "Or, by process of elimination, probably Miles. I had then do fake identity introductions today, but I think I got most of them figured out."

"Ooh. We have at least one overlap in our classes," Kitty noted.

"I did sort of think about that at one point," Rosa admitted. "I think having a few double agents in the field's only going to make things more interesting. Find out if we've got snitches."

Kitty stopped, poured a couple shots and left them at the other end of the bar, and watched the squirrels go right for them.

"Do we talk to them beforehand? Let them choose sides? I'm worried someone might raise a hand in your class and tip everyone off."

"I feel like it might be a risk worth taking," Rosa mused, leaning forward on folded arms to really soak in the conspiracy of it all. "You can probably emphasize the importance of secrecy on your end, but if you've got a rat, that probably won't stop them. Neither will a well-time class on being a snitch on my end..."

"True," Kitty said, and tilted her head. "You know... if I point out in mine that there is overlap, that could cause some real chaos."

She was betting most kids weren't keeping track of what class someone else was in.

"I like chaos," Rosa reminded Kitty, with the rare grin to prove it, although she had a feeling Kitty didn't really need the reminder.

Kitty grinned. "All right, who all do you have in class?"

Rosa narrowed her eyes a moment, because it was actually a little tricky remembering exactly when she wasn't even having them introduce themselves by their actual names...and didn't even remember the names of some of the kids she did recognize.

"Well, Miles, as I mentioned," she started. "The girl with the big cat, Farmer's Almanac, Obsessed with Catgirls, that one radio girl..."

This was probably not helpful.

"Hold on."

Rosa pulled out her phone and the email with her roster in it, and just read it off.

"Okay. Adora, Juillenne Milone (and Camden), Miles Morales, Illyana Rasputin, Alexis Rose, Eleanor Shellstrop, and Wayne."

There.

"Adora is my transforming student," Kitty said. "I also have Illyana and that could get interesting."

"If Illyana's who I think she is," and Rosa was pretty sure, it wasn't that hard to figure out, "then, yeah, you're definitely right there. She was easily one of the best at the fake identity. Hopefully, that means she's already good at subterfuge and can see how this might work to her advantage..."

And if Adora was who Rosa thought it was, then...oof, that one might actually make her a little worried. But that kind of enthusiasm was wont to make Rosa nervous even in normal circumstances.

"That's her. She's a younger alternate universe version of one of my best friends since we were kids," Kitty told her. "I don't think she's on my team. But I don't know that she wouldn't be on my team if it suited her better at the time, either."

"I'm sorry," said Rosa, who was very much enjoying all this speculation on this grand scheme involving their students that was going on here, but still needed to go back just a step. "Younger alternate universe version of one of your best freinds since you were kids?"

Just to...clear that up a little, as someone who'd started this conversation feeling a bit thrown off course by a few misplaced letters.

"My universe has an Illyana, who's the little sister of my boyfriend when I was fourteen and she was six at the time, but long story short, got to be the same age as me, and the one here is from a different universe than that one," Kitty explained.
