It was interesting how Rey never even questioned why she never turned little on these weekends. She was just always vaguely good with that, and more interested in seeing other people as kids anyway.

Today there were a bunch of different toys that needed fixing. For some strange reason. And given the kind of weekend it was, Rey was pretty intent on getting them done pretty fast so they could actually be used again.

She also kind of wondered how many would end up back here by the end of her shift...

You were in luck, Annie!

"Do you see that screwdriver there? The little one, with the... sort of diamond shape on the end?" She was pointing, if it helped.

Annie selected the correct screwdriver proudly. "This one?" she asked, very carefully holding it out to Rey.

She wanted to make sure she helped right so she'd get to keep doing it!

"That is perfect, thank you," Rey said, taking it. See, Finn, it wasn't so hard. "I'm going to use this to open up the back and see what's wrong with it."

"Like a toy operation." Annie was having some serious articulation issues this weekend, so 'operation' might not have been the clearest, but she was very solemn as she peered closely at the toy because operations were very serious.

"Like a toy operation, yes," Rey nodded, grabbing a palm-sized square box with wires hanging out of it. "You know a lot about operations?"

"Sometimes people do operations on TV." Usually offscreen, and all Annie really knew was that after an operation you got flowers and a teddy bear and balloons with mysterious, unreadable words on them. "You're like a toy doctor!"

"Kind of. I'm helping this toy get better so its owner can enjoy it again," she said, picking up a palm-sized box with wires coming out of it to plug into the little controls on the toy. "I get paid much less than TV doctors, though."

"Is it sick?" Annie asked, very concerned about the toy, now.

"Toys don't get sick like people do, but... it's kind of toy sick, yeah. Its lights don't turn on anymore, so I probably have to just replace some wires and it'll be all better," Rey explained.

"Sometimes I break stuff like that," Annie said, nodding in recognition. "I didn't know you could make it better with wires!"

Seriously, if you could just make it better with wires, she didn't get why her dad had gotten so mad about his stereo that time.

"It depends on how it's broken," Rey said. "And if you actually know how to fix it, which I do."

Maybe she could have fixed the stereo.

Probably. Annie was pretty sure Rey could fix anything, even if the stereo had involved smoking and shattered glass.

"Did you go to fix-it school?" Annie asked curiously, leaning her chin in her hand because that was what you did when you were curious.

"Nope. I just grew up learning how to fix things," she said, putting the multimeter down to start looking for some replacement wires.

"Like it's powers?" Annie asked. "Or like how I'm learning numbers at school?"

She was a whiz at one through twenty; anything further than that was just too many things to count, at this point.

"I didn't have powers." Or she did, but didn't know it, or know how to access them. "It's like learning numbers, but for spaceships."

She assumed. She'd probably had to teach herself numbers. That was fuzzy.

"Do you have a spaceship?" Annie asked in obvious awe, her hands going up to her cheeks in sheer disbelief.

"I have a spaceship," Rey told her. It's back home, though."

[defenderofdesmoines]

"And you go up in space in it?" Annie checked. "Have you gone to a star?"

[thatwaslucky]

"Not to a star. I've gone to other plants, though," Rey told her.
