You know, Tino telling Summer about his days as a toothpicker in his youth was almost enough to not only make her wonder (in that disturbed do-I-really-want-to-know? kind of way) just how old Tino actually was, anyway, but also to make her completely reconsider this whole toothpicker thing in the first place.

But!

She'd already gone, like, all in on the toothpicker thing with her jello shots, which sort of made it a point of no return. Sure, that just meant that all of tonight's jello shots were, in fact, simply being served up with toothpicks, but still! It was a theme! And she was superproud of how the cocktail weenie ones were actually shaped like little cocktail weenies. Shut up, it was the little things in life, dammit!

Though she did wonder if she should feel bad that she was already thinking she might have to explain to Seivarden that, no, you didn't also eat the toothpick.

Toothpicks are, unfortunately, not an effective material for zombie maintenence.

Please save Summer from listening to Tino's toothpicker stories, either by modding the crap out of him or talking to her instead!

Where the tables do have boxes of toothpicks there.

Look, there were a lot of busted open boxes in that shipment, and doing returns and exchanges with that distributor is a paaaain...

Wednesday off! I HAVE A WEDNESDAY OFF!!

Sadly for Summer, Seivarden had come across edible things on tiny sticks before. It made things easier if you didn't want to ruin your gloves.

"Hello Summer," she said. "What's with the toothpicks?"

"It's my new thing," said Summer confidently, as if this whole thing wasn't entirely based on not wanting to bother with filling in some paperwork about a busted box during shipment, and adjusting the toothpick currently balanced in her mouth a little. "I'm a toothpicker now. It translates pretty well to the jello shots, too, don't you think?"

Seivarden wasn't quite convinced, but said:

"It makes it easier to eat them. I wish there would be more of these when it comes to finger food. A lot more civilised."

She looked at the menu.

"So, all of them as usual. What's the last one?"

Summer set out the first two for Seivarden, then cocked her head curiously when she set down the last. "You've never had cocktail weenies before? They're basically just little sausages with a barbecue sauce.

"Only these ones are blended up with jello and bourbon and reshaped again."

"But with barbecue sauce?"

She shrugged, put it in her mouth, swallowed and then continued with the lemon margarita.

"That one was better. So how are you?"

"I swear," said Summer, around her toothpick, with a small roll of her eyes, "people in this town have no appreciation for a good savory jello shot.

"But I'm good." She smiled lightly. She was actually kind of impressed with herself, that she was managing to keep down a minor panic about the upcoming weekend and that coping with it was manifesting itself in something as harmless as toothpicks this time. "Valentine's Day was great, I'll have to show you the new gun Barry got me, I think you'll appreciate it. How about you? Did you do 3MD?"

"Barry got you a gun for Valentine's Day? That was sweet."

There was no sarcasm at all, she truly thought that.

"Yes, I did do 3MD. It was fun, although I knew half of the people already, and some were... not good at conversation."

How Jesse manage to be mayor despite that?

"Then Prompto insisted watching some kind of puppy bowl at my place. It was a good weekend."

She smiled.

"Thanks for the flowers, by the way."

"He got me a gun, and some sweet data upgrades for my ship's shields and two new charms for my bracelet, a heart and a palm tree," and excuse her for a moment as she just sort of basked in the happy tightening in her chest about that, "because we went to the Bahamas for the day because winters here suuuuuuuck.

"Man, though," she added, shaking her head with a marveling, awed expression, "he really is fucking brilliant with that bracelet. Now all he has to do is get some cute, meaningful charm for whatever reason, and I turn to absolute goo. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here wrecking my brains over what the fuck do you even get super smart scientist who can pretty much invent anything he wants? So I got him a box of rocks." They weren't just rocks, but it was funnier this way. "And he loved it."

Said with the utmost fondness, of course. Seriously. It was almost kinda gross.

"And you're welcome," she nodded. "Thank you for the flower" emphasis on the singular? Maaaaybeeee, "too. It was really nice."

Seivarden's smiled widened as she listened to Summer. She picked up that last emphasis too, but wasn't going to comment on it.

"It's always a good sign when you manage to find the right gifts for each other," she observed.

Was going to a bar really in the spirit of Ash Wednesday? Probably not, but Annie had been good and gone to church earlier and had taken the ash (and then washed it off her forehead when she got home), and she was even giving up a thing for Lent, and it wasn't like she was going to the bar to throw back a ton of shots so much as to visit her friend, the bartender....

So anyway, Annie was pretty sure God wouldn't mind if she had, like, a beer. Plus it helped that she was in a far better mood today than she had been last Wednesday as she settled onto a barstool. The lack of baggage helped, of course, but so did making up with Diego, and then there had been the weekend.

Which was why Annie greeted Summer with a bright, "How was your Valentine's Day?" with a slight lift of her brows. Because you know what was pretty universally a good reason to do a milestone thing with your boyfriend? Valentine's Day.

And Summer, who was very fluent in bright leading questions that served as greetings and eyebrows, just sort of quirked her own eyebrow at Annie a little bit and answered, while setting in front of her at least two of the three jello shots (you could probably guess which ones), "Pretty good. We went to the Bahamas, had a picnic on the beach, I eviscerated a few palm trees, and invited Barry to dinner with my family this weekend."

Sneaking that one low-key under the radar among everything else and while she was pretty sure Annie would be distracted with her own shit right now? Oh, you bet.

"Why?" The question was pointed, and so was the expression. "How was yours?" Miss Very Marked Changing in Disposition from the Last Time She Was Sitting at This Bar.

"Your family? Summer, that's great." Annie wasn't so far distracted by her own shit as to not pick that up, no, and she looked both surprised and very pleased for Summer about that. Meeting the family was kind of a big deal in any relationship, but given what she knew about Summer's family, specifically, this seemed like a very big step, indeed. "Also, jealous of the Bahamas."

Because seriously. February in Maryland kind of sucked a lot.

"Mine was good," she added, plucking up one of those shots. "We made up last week, so that was good," and she might have been trying to downplay it but, like, good luck not grinning like an idiot about it, Annie, "and then we went out to dinner and stopped a robbery."

You know, normal date stuff.

"I mean," said Summer, the smile now a bit tentative since this wasn't really stuff she usually talked with Seivarden about, because Seivarden usually had a good way of turning it around into how she didn't understand something and just sort of spoiling it as she tried to explain it, "it definitely does help. But it's not like I'm that difficult to get gifts for, either. Usually, if it's shiny or pink or can be put in jello, you're pretty much golden."

Annie, your actual acknowledgement of what Summer had said about the family was earning you a withering look, because you weren't actually supposed to notice that. Summer wasn't used to people actually listening to the things she said, after all, but it was good to get a gauge on that kind of thing. And actually kind of nice that Annie had noticed and acknowledged it, even if she was still getting a look for.

The Bahamas thing she'd totally take and preen over, though, no question, but it was definitely time to focus in on Annie instead.

"Told you it would all be fine," she said, because, yes, also needed to gloat on that a little bit, even if she did totally get Annie going all doom and gloom about the whole thing. "And look at that, fighting crime together. Like, could you have even asked for a better make-up Valentine's Day?"

Gifts from someone you cared about wasn't that hard to understand, even for Seivarden.

"But from your lover you expect something more, don't you?"

At least Summer should, in Seivarden's opinion.

Look, Annie had basically made peace with never introducing Diego to her mother as well as never meeting any member of his family besides Five (at least, on purpose), so hearing that Summer and Barry were going to manage that milestone even with the...somewhat fraught nature of Summer's relationship with her family just made Annie all happy for them. At least that was progressing well!

"We also said the thing," Annie added, a little shy as she just sort of played with the remaining jello shot. "Like, Diego said it right before these guys started firing at us. Super romantic." She actually meant that, too!

She just had to use that word, didn't she? Summer felt an awkward sort of heat rush to her face at that, but she wasn't about to go around correcting it if she didn't have to.

"Honestly," she said, "I'd have been happy with just some flowers and chocolates."

Sure, it might have required some convincing, but she would be happy with it.

"Besides," she added, shrugging nonchalantly, "Barry and I have always been more about...experiences over things anyway. Things are just material bullshit, but experiences...those, like, last, you know? Valentine's Day is just overcommercialized romantic bullshit anyway."

"Is... everything, I mean... fine?"

Seivarden might not be the most perceptive, but that response did seem a bid unexpected. Especially considering that luggage, which she did remember, after all.

Way better than on a toilet planet with your gradfather in audible distance while using said toilet planet for its intended purposes, anyway!

But like Summer was going to let Annie get away with that.

"Thing?" she asked, head tilted and eyed big and wide and innocent as they blinked oh-so-vacantly at her. "What thing?"

And now for the mammoth effort it took to actually maintain that bewildered expression and not even crack a smirk.

"Oh, yeah," Summer laughed a little as if the mere suggestion that it was otherwise was ridonkulous, "totally."

Even if it wasn't, Seivarden wasn't exactly on her list of people to actually talk about it.

"In fact," she offered, "he's actually coming to have dinner with my family this weekend."

Pause for going ahead and pushing the little flare of panic that went down with that statement way, way, way, way down deep, all the way down to her shoes, and thank god that baggage thing was last weekend or else they'd all be murdered by luggage up in here right now.

"Is that even really a thing, in Radchaai culture? The whole 'meet the parents' business?"

Please say no and have absolutely no cultural reference for this, Seivarden, so they could just drop it and move on, but just in case....

"Oh, by the way, totally unrelated, but I've culled more of Pancakes' toys again, so if you want a few more for Issa, please take them."

Annie gave her a slightly-withering look of her own -- though, given the subject matter, it was not nearly as withering as she might have managed under other circumstances.

"The 'I love you' thing," she amended, and even as begrudgingly as she tried to say it, she couldn't help her smile. "That thing. And then I had to tackle him so he wouldn't get shot."

And then they'd said it approximately five thousand more times since Sunday evening.
