Summer was honestly kind of hoping for a nice, normal night at the bar that Wednesday, especially following the events of last Wednesday, where the island was doing that thing, but she knew that was not going to happen very quickly into her shift, and that was all because of Tino's face.

"Seriously, though, why is your face like that? Is that supposed to be a smile? Why do you look like you totally just got--

"OhmyGOD.

"No, I don't want to hear the details! GOD."

Summer was going to try and work on the far side of the bar as much as possible tonight and was considering arming herself with a water bottle to spritz him with every time he passed by and tried to drop specifics in passing.

"You know what, Tino? On second though, I would at least like this lady's phone number so I can send her my condolances and recommend a good therapist."

"Should I be worried?" Stark asked, not really expecting a useful answer. "And how will I see if I don't know where I'm meant to be?"

"Why does everyone always start worrying about that?" asked Summer, because, seriously, should she start developing a complex about it? She thought her parties always turned out well, anyway...

"But I wouldn't leave you hanging," she said. "But the plan is to start out here, probably at Caritas, with jello shots, obviously. And then to end up here, too, only at the Devil's Nest." Because she'd be legal then, bitches!!! "But what's in between? Well...."

She was definitely going to be more coy about that until they got closer to the date itself.

"I worry often," Stark pointed out. "Not just because of your parties. That's just how I am."

Summer looked a little skeptical about that, feeling that old, familiar kernel of self-doubt dropping into her stomach and getting comfortable.

Did people actually kind of hate her parties? Was she just totally a hack fraud this whole time?

But she smiled anyway and said, "The only thing you'll probably have to worry about is having a good time. It's gonna be awesome."

Well, now it just felt like she was convincing herself...

"Your parties are usually very impressive," Stark said. "This just sounds very mysterious."

And he worried! He got anxious about things.

"The mystery is part of the point, though!" Summer insisted, almost wondering if she could maybe at least explain to Stark what the fill plan was. "It's what'll get everyone hyped and excited!"

Because it's not like her birthday alone would actually be enough, Stark, come on!

"If the mystery is the point I can live with mystery," Stark said. He would just spend the next week wondering about it!

"But I'd come even if there weren't a mystery."

That was why the hype was all about!

Summer bit her lip a little as she looked at Stark like she was considering something.

"Would you..." she then ventured tentatively, "still come even if it was just a punch bowl and some potato chips in someone's danky ass basement?"

"If you asked," Stark said, offering a small smile. "Then why not?"

You were his friend, Summer! And he liked chips.

And Summer gave a small, grateful smile back.

Because even if Stark was just saying that to be nice, it was still good to hear it.

"Well," she said, "I can promise at least no danky ass basements, anyway."

"Good. One thing not to worry about," Stark said. Not that he'd been particularly concerned with basements, danky ass or otherwise.

"Honestly," said Summer, confidence now somewhat renewed, "the only thing I'm worried about is just making sure I manage to get home after."

And even that wasn't really a concern, because her boyfriend was awesome and also didn't really drink, so she was pretty sure she was golden there.

"I don't think you'll get lost coming from the other bar," Stark said. "It's a small island."

"That's assuming I make it to the other bar," Summer pointed out, realizing that being cagey at this point might be a little trickier. "There's a lot of stuff before that, and I plan on drinking through all of it."

So much for being scared straight, eh?

"Nobody will leave you behind on your birthday," Stark said. At least nobody he could think of. "That would be terrible."

Summer...actually hadn't thought of that. She had just been thinking about getting lost or something on the way.

And now she was thinking about that.

And how being left behind? Not really as unexpected as you'd think.

She laughed a little. "I mean, I'd hope not!" she said, much lighter than she felt. "Bit thankfully, that's where portal guns can come in handy."

If she got lost, nobody would leave without finding her! Nobody here, anyway.

"Portal gun? So we're not just going to the mainland."

Oh, sure, he thought that now....but have your grampa and brother leave you on one planetoid of face-hugging aliens that made you their god-empress because of a toothpick once, and it became a whole thing.

But the observation made Summer grin a little.

"No getting anything past you, apparently!" she said. "I mean, technically, we are going to the mainland, but not, like, juuuuust the main mainland?"

She was going to just end up telling him in trying to explain it at this point, wasn't she?

Stark would do his best not to leave her behind, anyway! But then, 'better than Rick and Morty' was a pretty low bar to have to clear.

"I'll keep that in mind." And hope they weren't going anywhere he stood out too much.
