Devil's Nest | Monday Night

Annie ~~had meant to do this last week~~ wandered into the bar on Monday to find Tiny behind the bar and a faint scent of cement dust in the air.

"You guys really didn't hire another bartender to replace me?" she asked, while Tiny gave her what Annie was interpreting as a look that meant he was glad to see she'd returned!

In any case, she wasn't heading back to New York until tomorrow, so she easily slipped behind the bar and started poking around for the blender. "What do you think -- mai tais?"

At least they were actually seasonally appropriate now!

There was a slight smile as Jessica saw who was behind the bar today. Just a slight one. Small. Teeny tiny. But it was there and she might be fighting it to keep it that way.

"Bourbon," she said, casually as if this was just an every day occurrence of weeks not seeing Annie behind the bar on a Monday.

Some semblance of order was returned to Jess' life and she truly appreciated it.

"No kidding?" Annie teased, already abandoning her blender and moving to the bottles. "Can't interest you in something pink just this once?"

Annie actually caught herself and made a little face, adding, "Though, like, I'm still recovering from my last frozen drink experience, so maybe that's fair."

"Summer's epic pub crawl didn't agree with you?" Jessica teased. "I'd expect someone of your strength and constitution would be able to handle a margarita."

"Oh, I handled like...six margaritas, probably," Annie estimated. "Had to tap out in Seattle. Portals plus drinking is a bad combination."

"Duly noted," Jessica said taking a sip of her drink and let out a sigh of satisfaction. "Though margaritas aren't really my speed. So do we get to enjoy your bartending for a bit longer? Or will the Seven have you back and singing on American Idol sometime soon?"

"Okay, first of all, let's never talk about that song again." Like she would ever get away with that. "And I'm at least here this week! Though I'll probably be around most Mondays. Looks like my Seven stuff is mostly going to be the middle of the week. So I should also mostly miss the Wednesday stuff!"

"You sure you didn't arrange that to avoid Skywalker's shenanigans?" Jessica asked with a raised eyebrow. "And you have no reason to feel bad for that song. My sister was a minor celebrity and her chart breaking song was far more ridiculous."

"It's a fun coincidence," Annie said with a little smile. It had maybe been a little intentional. "And yeah, your sister's song sounded kind of great? What was it called again?"

"I want you cray cray," Jessica said with a snort of amusement. "An anthem for our generation if there ever was one."

"It's basically poetry," Annie agreed with a nod. "People probably quote its lyrics all the time in, like, wedding and graduation speeches."

"You survived, I see," Danny said, kind of surprised to see her in again.

"I tapped out at the stop after Hawaii," Annie admitted with a resigned sigh. "Rey made sure I got that Gatorade."

It had been life-saving.

Danny laughed and shook his head. "Yeah, I guess that's a thing you sorta figure out on your own."

"I mean, to be fair, I have never been to a twenty-first birthday -- any kind of a birthday -- like that one," Annie noted. "Like, my own twenty-first involved one beer with my mom."

She even held up a single finger to indicate one.

Danny winced in sympathy for her. "I love my folks and all, but... no."

"I had what one might call a slightly sheltered upbringing," Annie admitted with a little smile. Which, if Iowa hadn't been a hint, Believe Expo certainly would have been. "But I think I'm going to need some space before the next rager. Diego and I are planning a housewarming, but it'll probably just be a quiet thing."

'Diego and I' were not planning anything; Annie was planning a party where Diego would probably hide in the kitchen the whole time.

Yeah, Danny's expression let it be known that he was aware of Diego's social limitations. But it was cute that she was doing the 'we' thing about it.

"I'll be sure to bring a dessert. I'm sure you could bribe Steve into helping with a beer or two as well."

"Okay, but no keg stands this time," Annie said optimistically. "Did you get back to Hawaii for Fathers' Day?"

...was it Fathers' Day in Hawaii? Time was weird.

"It wasn't the holiday there, but we managed to get back anyway," Danny replied with a nod. "Grace and I made sure Steve didn't spend too much time at the cemetery."

The whole thing with Wo Fat had opened up wounds this year.

"Probably good for him to hang out with her, too," Annie noted with a soft little smile. "It can be a hard day."

There had been, unsurprisingly, zero mentions of the holiday at her place yesterday. Lots of American Ninja Warrior, though.

What, the Hargreeves didn't have a big Father's Day thing? WEIRD.

"Well, if Hawaii taught me something, it's that the family you make can be just as good as the one you're born into. Or better in some cases."

The McGarretts filled him with sadness, okay?

Not to mention the conspicuously absent Daddy January. Everyone was totally fine, though. Totally fine.

"Aww, Danny," Annie told him, leaning her chin in a hand. "That's very sweet."

From anyone else, that might have been sarcastic.

"Just as long as you don't start calling me Uncle, because I will have to go die." Because it implied he was ooooold. Thanks, Hawaii.

"Oh my God, Uncle Danny." This was your fault for putting that idea in her head, Danny. "I don't think you're quite old enough for that on the regular, but I'm keeping it in my back pocket."

In case she needed to prompt him to go die, apparently.

"Ah!" Danny warned, pointing a finger. "Give me until Grace hits college for that, will you? I still gotta keep up with Steve somehow."

"That seems like a fruitless endeavor," Annie said delicately, smiling at him. "But I'll hold off, sure."

"He is the same age as me, don't even."

The source of the cement dust, apparently.

Way to not even look at the camera, buddy.

… How did I not know they filmed in Canada? Huh.

They film in Toronto! Production has apparently been quite fraught this year. This was the first time the whole cast was able to get together in public since getting fully vaccinated, aw.
