Caritas | Thursday Evening

If Laszlo noticed that any screens were doing anything weird, he didn't say so. Fire was a normal way to heat oneself and pretty enough to look at; humans had been fascinated by it for centuries, and it wouldn't have surprised him to see them regress to past interests.

But he didn't really notice. His cameraman did, though, and he was spending the evening behind the bar, frowning at the monitor of his camera and comparing his phone to the boom operator's.

Maybe Laszlo would learn the actual name for things but that would require a level of caring he simply hadn't and was unlikely to reach.

Drink regular drinks!

After last week's radio, Astrid really couldn't not come into the bar that Thursday, especially since the reported trend on specials seemed to continue.

"Hello," she said as she took a seat at the bar, "I am a regular human and would like some regular human wine, please."

Which seemed all that much more funny with how achingly true it was.

"A regular human wine you shall have, then!" Laszlo proclaimed, doing his very best to look reassuringly at the camera (who knew whether it was filming or not, today) since this young specimen looked, quite literally, delicious. But see, camera? See how he was being good and not causing a panic? You're welcome. He was capable of tremendous growth, you know.

He was nearly so sidetracked by his own willpower that he forgot to get the wine, but Laszlo did eventually rally and selected a bottle completely at random. "This'll do, I'm sure," he said confidently, holding the bottle out like a sommelier (see, he knew things!) and revealing that what he had grabbed was actually Kahlua, which was very much not wine. But how was he supposed to know? It all looked the same. They shouldn't serve it all in glass bottles if they weren't interchangeable.

Astrid turned her head to follow Lazslo's eyes curiously toward the camera, and then looked back with her head tilted as she considered the offering...and what exactly to make of this definitely not exactly regular situation.

"That," Astrid told him with a small smile, "looks perfect, thank you."

And only the smallest of pauses before she asked, "You're the...newest," emphasis on new? What emphasis on new?, "bartender here, right?"

"As far as I know, but I'm not on the hiring committee," Laszlo declared, getting a wine glass -- see, look at him know stuff -- and pouring it just perfectly full of...Kahlua. "Perhaps she's hired others since. But I'm told that since this is such an impossibly tiny town, new people are noticed quickly."

And disappearances, too. Shame.

"Laszlo Cravensworth," he added as he placed the glass before her with a little bow. "At your service." It was sort of fun to play bartender! He got to tap into chivalrous impulses that didn't see the light of day (bah-dum-tss) outside of the occasional indulgent moment with Nadja.

"Astrid Magnussen," she offered back, very carefully pulling that all-too-full glass of Kaluha that she would be surprised if she'd managed to get through even half of closer, "the Normal Human."

Taking a sip was going to take her whole concentration for a moment, both not to spill and because anything more than a sip just straight Kaluha would be a bit...much.

"I mostly knew about you being new," she then offered, "because I report on Thursdays for the radio, with my friend Troy, the Disco Spider."

"Oh, the radio," Laszlo remarked, his eyes widening in interest. "What a marvelous invention. The ability to broadcast one's voice, one's thoughts, one's creations to the world at large. Though I'm afraid I've not heard your show, my dear Astrid. It's on in the mornings, isn't it?"

He'd gleaned that much in his time here, and you know what Laszlo was not? A morning person. Mostly because he'd catch on fire.

"What," he added, genuinely very curious, "is a Disco Spider? I adore disco."

Of course he did.

"It's Troy and Astrid in the Morning, actually," Astrid informed him with a faint grin and a shockingly impressive ability to avoid not actually singing it, "every Friday. And what he is...is..."

Oh, how to really explain Troy "T-Bone Butt Soup Disco Spider" Barnes?

"He's one of a kind," she offered, definitely a bit fondly, "that's for sure. He'd probably be better at explaining that I would be, actually. Maybe next week, you should do a Disco Spider special, and he can tell you all about it."

Had Dwight already been to Caritas the day before? Yes, yes he had. And there had been jello shots and karaoke involved that night. Tonight though, he was looking for just a regular laid back relaxing evening with a drink or two to unwind after a ~~handwavey~~ busy day at the shop.

"Are there any Regular Human Beers back there with the Regular Human Wine?" he asked as he sat down at the bar.

"You, my friend, are in luck," Laszlo said brightly, with seemingly no awareness of how weird his special was. He produced a glass with a little flourish before tipping it under a tap.

Which tap? You would get to find out, Dwight! A beer tap! (A notably non-wooden one, just to be safe.)

"And there you are!" It had a bit of a head, but Laszlo thought he'd done a nice job, really.

Dwight raised and eyebrow as he looked from the glass to Laszlo. A bit of a head? The glass was almost half foam. But he wasn't going to be a jerk about it and took a drink, trying to avoid ending up with a foam mustache.

"Since you are still here I guess that means you are sticking around" Dwight said as he set the glass down. "Setting in alright so far?"

Pff, don't be such a baby, Dwight. It really was just a bit of a head.

"I'm settling in fine," Laszlo replied, trying to figure out whether he'd met this particular tall drink of water -- or, well, blood -- prior before shrugging it off. "Feels like I've just arrived."

Vampire time perception would do that to you.

"Nice of those girls to throw a party," he added, even if the blonde one was clearly terrible. "That was a nice time."

"I'm not much of a party person myself (anymore) but it was quite a fun time" Dwight replied. "Though this is my first time experiencing the holidays here on the island so it's been... interesting... the last few days."

"Has it?" asked the vampire who only came out at night, hardly ran his taps, and barely noticed anything. "Never been much of one for Christmas."

The Christ part tended to be a little inconvenient, unfortunately.

"Well, at least compared to holidays I have experienced in the past" Dwight said simply. "Things like this aren't a normal Christmas season thing" he said with a slight laugh as he pulled out his phone, the screen still stubbornly showing a Yule-log.
