Fandom Island Museum, Tuesday Daytime

The night before had been... interesting. It had ended with Llewellyn walking Steven home, making sure Steven ate, and then spending the night in what had actually turned out to be just sleep.

Not that sleep had come easily.

Nor had the morning been much easier. Which was why, combined with the concern over Steven's loss of two days over the weekend, Steven was not alone for his shift at the museum.

This didn't mean other visitors wouldn't be welcome, of course. Frankly Steven appreciated all the distraction he could get.

And guess who was clinging back again?

"Kept having to remind myself I couldn't," Steven said. "Because no matter what she was like she was gone."

"It's all right if that hurts," Watts told him. "All right if it doesn't, too. Or if it changes from day to day."

"It hurts," Steven admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I wish it didn't. I wish it couldn't, for Marc's sake. But it does."

"I think he understands that," Watts said. Which didn't necessarily make it any easier for Steven to bear, but it was worth reminding him.

"I've not done anything," Steven said. He sat back, not moving far from Llewellyn's reach but wanting to be able to look at him once more. "Marc told me and - I didn't want it to be real."

Steven grimaced, realizing how that sounded in the greater context of it all.

"But tonight - you're meant to," Steven said. "Those who've passed. Parents especially. No matter what I do it feels like no answer is right."

"I think- closure might be good for you," Watts said slowly. "Acknowledging formally that she's gone. But whatever you decide to do, or not do, I'm going to be right here by your side."

"I don't know," Steven said. "Suppose that's its own answer, isn't it? Not ready to decide yet? Shame there's no guidebook about what to do when all this happens. The things we're meant to do got buggered from the start."

"'Not ready to decide yet' is a perfectly reasonable answer," Watts said. "Rather than making a decision in haste purely because you feel obligated to."

"It's difficult with the holiday," Steven said. He wasn't disagreeing with Llewellyn, rather giving him more information about why Steven felt as he did. "It's the first time I'm meant to do something. After I found out, I mean. Feels disrespectful not to. But what she did to him is worse. How can I show any respect to that?"

Watts couldn't help of think of Rivka Michaelson in that moment.

"Why would you choose to hold a shiva for the husband who betrayed you? Why would you mourn him?"
"I did a terrible thing, but... I still praise God."

"No, I understand," he said to Steven. He hadn't understood Rivka's motivations then, but over time, he'd started to see why she acted the way she did.

Steven leaned his head against Llewellyn's shoulder. "That's what you do, isn't it? Be understanding."

Steven was amazed that Llewellyn knew the truth about how broken Steven's memories were and still wanted to be with him.

Watts’s memories may be intact, but there were parts of himself that he considered wrong and broken. That Steven could be so kind and understanding about those parts of him was amazing.

“It’s easy when it’s you.”

"Don't know that I'm easy," Steven said. Particularly considering how unusual his problems were. "But I'm still grateful you think I'm worth it."

“That is, I suppose, more accurate,” Watts said, pressing a kiss to the top of Steven’s head. “When I say ‘easy’ I don’t mean to diminish anything you’re going through, but that yes, the choice to understand and support you is because I love you so.”

"Still more things for us to talk about some day," Steven said, as a warning. How he'd been created for a start. "I'll understand, I promise."

He'd be heartbroken but he'd understand.

“You’re borrowing trouble again,” Watts pointed out gently.

"You're kind for putting up with that as well," Steven said, since it was true.

“You do the same for me,” Watts pointed out, because Steven was always so good about those times Watts let his anxiety regarding Steven leaving get out of control.

Steven leaned up to press a kiss to Llewellyn's cheek. "It's easy when it's you."
