The second Kitty realized what day it was today she messaged Tino to give him the day off with pay. She just didn't want to deal with that particular situation. Ew.

It was the most uncomfortable day of the year and she knew the mistletoe hanging right the hell above the bar was going to be yelling soon enough, but she'd at least saved her customers from the Tino of it all.

"Well, this is a day, isn't it?" Jaskier looked pleasantly flushed at least.

"I have never had to set so much greenery on fire in my life," Yennefer grumbled.

You shouldn't do that, Yen. What if the fumes were toxic? Or worse, sex pollenic?

"I mean, that's one way to deal with it," Jaskier admitted.

"Well, what else would you have me do?" Yennefer asked. "Lock lips with the cashier at Ching Tai? Honestly, Jaskier, don't be even sillier than you usually are." Tsk.

"I'm just saying," Jaskier replied before looking maybe a little uncharacteristically worried. "Have you... heard anything from home?"

Ah. That. "I got a rather concerning message the other day," Yennefer admitted, and then muttered, "And here I thought Tissaia had forgotten I existed." After she quit and all.

"This war is... turning into something, isn't it?" She knew more about the intricacies of politics than most people he spent time with back home.

"Fucking Nilfgaard," Yennefer spat. She couldn't believe she was almost assigned there. "Apparently there's going to be some kind of a meeting at Aretuza to decide what to do about it all." Yes. The mages might be getting involved.

"Are you going?" Jaskier asked. Because if Yennefer was doing something other than fucking about, things really were serious.

Aw, it was like he knew her. "Well, on the one hand the last time I went home I got stuck," and then met Geralt of Rivia. "On the other hand--" Was that a hint of vulnerability? Couldn't be. "Tissaia did ask." Quick, change the subject. "Any news out of the artistic set I should be aware of?"

"Just that this Nifgaard is bad news for creatives," he said glumly. "Very unwelcoming for anyone who disagrees with anything."

"This new emperor," Yennefer began, and then she was too busy trying to swat a sprig of mistletoe away to finish whatever she'd been going to say there. "No! Absolutely not!"

"Will you get teleported out if you burn it?" HE KNEW THE BAR DID THAT.

"I don't know!" Yennefer was forced, extremely against her will, to admit. "And I am not landing in the duck pond because of a weed!"

It was an obligate hemiparasite, Yennefer, don't be rude.

"Well." HE WAS MAKING HIS POINT.

"Do you have any idea how heavy this dress would be wet?!" Men.

Yennefer had to duck the mistletoe, and it very nearly got tangled in her hair. "This is unacceptable. No," she told the plant, as if it had ears. "I refuse." Do you, Yennefer? Do you really?

"I'm not repulsive, you know!" Just full of disdain.

"That doublet certainly is."

Jaskier squawked loudly at that. "You take that back!"

"Well, I could, but I would be lying." Guys. The mistletoe was getting kind of aggressive here.

"You! You are just mean!" Which was why Jaskier was going to kiss her wrong at the behest of a weed.

She had always been mean. It was one of her charms.

And now she was making out with a bard in a bar at the behest of decorative shrubbery. Where had she gone so wrong?

"Seems like you're enjoying it," Kitty noted.

"I am full of love for everyone," Jaskier assured her with a wink.

"Might as well take advantage of that while you can," Kitty said. "Was that a reason to come to the bar?"

"Oh, I was invited by my lovely-if-you-tilt-your-head-and-squint-a-little co-teacher for a drink," Jaskier replied.

"Did that invite go out today or before today?" Should she ship it or not?

"Oh, yesterday," Jaskier said quickly. "Very much yesterday."

"Okay just checking," she said just as quickly.

Give them time to really bond over being annoyed at Geralt and then some torture.

"Outside of the whole horny week, it's not a thing for us," he assured Kitty.

"Good to know," she said. "Though the mistletoe only really gives the most grudging of choices sometimes."

"Oh? Sure not..." He was shamelessly pointing at Tino.

"Oh god no. Ew," Kitty said. "Ew. Ewwwww."

"The concern is warranted this day," Jaskier replied.

"Wine," Yennefer requested with no preamble. "I don't care what it is as long as it's drinkable. Lots of it."

"Do you have a preference on red or white?" She seemed like a red girl but let's not assume!

"Generally I prefer reds," Yennefer admitted, "but if there's greenery too close to the bottles white is fine." She could be practical.

Kitty glanced up. "I have eyes on it," she said, making a quick movement to grab the first wine bottle she saw.

That had been respectably brave, and Yennefer was planning to tip accordingly. "Well, now I have to know what you got," she said, even though she really did not care. A wine snob she was not.

"Merlot. That work?" Kitty checked.

"That's perfect," Yennefer assured her. "I was going to say I'm surprised more people don't need a drink, but I suppose they're hiding from the...attack plants."

"They're smart. It's really best to lock yourself up in a room and not get the yells," Kitty advised, getting a glass to pour.

I left a bar the other night just as they started passing down mistletoe on a stick. Not a fan of catching Covid from drunk people in ugly sweaters.
