Fandom Island Museum, Thursday Daytime

Steven was at work on time and in a good mood. Things at the Museum were running smoothly, the weather was nice, and next week his beau was having a birthday with not one but two celebrations.

Of course that last one meant there were preparations needed. Steven wanted to be sure that Llewellyn had an excellent time of it. Which was why when he had a break Steven used his free time to look up menus and do research on the right present to get. Steven wanted to be sure that everything went wonderfully.

He'd offer the same attention to detail to any visitors to the museum, of course. That was part of his job after all.

[Let's try this again, shall we?]

Nell stopped by with some teas for Steven and the Detective. Yes, she'd meant to give then to the Detective on Tuesday, but she'd been distracted and had forgotten. "Morning, Steven."

Steven smiled when he saw her. "Morning, Nell! How are you today?"

"Me? I'm doing well," Nell said a little distractedly. "How are you doing?"

"Doing well," Steven said. "Planning for Llewellyn's birthday next week. Did he have a chance to invite you?"

"Yes, yes, he did," Nell said, "and I told him I'd be pleased to come. I just admit I'm not sure what an appropriate present might be, though."

"You being there is present enough," Steven said. "But if you're looking for ideas there's books or things involving cooking. Maybe things to make travel easier as well, since he and I do enjoy going on holiday."

Nell nodded. "I can do that,"she said.

"But the main thing is having friends over to celebrate," Steven said. "So it's wonderful you'll be able to make it. I know Llewellyn must have been thrilled to know you could."

"I wouldn't miss it," Nell assured him. She looked down for a moment and realized she had the year still in her hands. "Oh, I brought these for the two of you. You said you'd used up a lot of your supply when the Detective was ill, so I brought you some more."

"Oh cheers," Steven said, reaching to take it off her hands. "I meant to pop by on Tuesday but the day got away from me. It was dead handy to have, don't mind telling you. Perfect thing to help ease the aches and pains."

"Oh, no it's fine," Nell said. "I'd intended to give them to the Detective when he was there Tuesday night, but I forgot."

"Everything all right?" Steven asked, since Nell normally wasn't the sort to forget that kind of thing.

"Gladio and Prompto are missing," she said quietly. "No one has seen Gladio since sometime Monday and Prompto since early Tuesday."

She started to say something, stopped, then started again. "I... I think maybe they got taken back home again. Which must be a terrible thing for Liz to have to think about. I'm going to stop by and try and see her later."

"Prompto as well?" Steven asked. "Stark mentioned Gladio yesterday but we thought perhaps he might be busy or something. You're right, that is worrisome."

Steven had been intending to see Liz later that day to invite her and Prompto to the party. Now he had extra reason to go.

"Both of them," Nell said. "And there was no class today so I couldn't check in on Iggy."

"If they've been taken up by a portal again - " Steven shook his head. He didn't know Gladio very well but he knew what Liz had gone through when Prompto couldn't get back. And that was before Noctra was in any way in the picture.

"Right, keep a good thought," Steven said, for himself as much as anything. "It might be something perfectly normal. They're still in this dimension but can't communicate for some reason."

Of course the more time passed the less likely it was that that was a good reason.

"That's what - I think maybe that's what happened. But I'm trying to be hopeful. For Liz especially. Gladio... I know he misses home so much. And his sister." She was going to be brave. She was.

"Not the same if they can't communicate though, is it?" Steven said. His tone wasn't challenging, more generally agreeing with the overall stance that it was a muddled situation at best. "That's what it was like the last time. Difficult for them to talk to anyone here. That can only be harder given everything that's happened, the baby and all."

"I know," Nell said. "I could be happy for Gladio - to be back with his sister and in his world. But Prompto - I know he wouldn't want to leave Liz and Noctra behind."

She hoped Gladio didn't really want to leave her behind either, but she had lots of practice being alone and Liz didn't =- not to meniton having the baby to think of.

"If it's an unplanned trip it's not good for anyone," Steven agreed. "Hopefully it's not that. Or if it is they can get back quickly."

"I know," Nell said. "And I hope that too. I... I really like him, Steven."

Steven tried not to smile too wide when she said that. He didn't want her to feel self-conscious. "I'm glad. You deserve someone who can make you happy, in whatever way that may be. And it's too soon to be too worried, I say. Far too many things could be happening to assume the worst."

Even if for these two people in particular a random portal really was the most logical conclusion.

"It's a small island and it's been four days, Steven," Nell said quietly."That's a long time. I'm trying to be hopeful, but I'm also trying to be prepared."

"They're both strong and capable people," Steven said. "It'd take a lot to take them down for good."

"Which is why I think they may be home," Nell said. "I can't imagine anything here taking them out easily."

"Well, we'll try to hope for the best," Steven said. "Some sort of miscommunication and not any real danger."

Steven wasn't ruling out danger, but he didn't want Nell to feel there was nothing but despair.

Nell nodded. "I'm praying too. Not always so sure how I feel about God, but for Gladio and Prompto I'm willing to try."

"Depends on the god, in my experience," Steven said. Of course the one he had a deal with was silent on the topic, but there were any number of reasons for why. It could be anything from Gladio and Prompto not being in danger to Khonshu not considering them under his protection since they were from a different universe. It wasn't worth getting into, in Steven's opinion.

"M'not even sure your gods are real where I'm from, but the one I was brought up with has a lot of questions to answer," Nell said. "But I'm not ruling anything out."

"Seems different for each universe," Steven agreed. "Suppose it makes sense. Different universes have different needs. Even the gods on my world look over different people. Still, whatever help can be had is good I think."

"I agree," Nell said. "And here in Fandom, who knows? Any of them - or all of them - could be real."

"Not just the ones from my world, yes," Steven agreed.

Nell sighed. "I just want to know - even if the news isn't good."

"Hopefully something will come up soon," Steven said.

"That's the hope," Nell said. She looked down at her hands. "Did I give you the teas?"

"You did, yeah," Steven said, gently. He knew what it was like to forget things, especially when you were stressed. He held them up so she could see. "You said it was for Llewellyn and me to stock up again. Thank you."

"Oh good," she said. "I'd hate to think I forgot to bring it again."

Nell smiled at him a little sheepishly. "My brain is running in a hundred different directions."

"Understandable," Steven said. "Here, if you want to pop by and check on Liz that's all right. I'll go over come lunch when I'm available."

Nell nodded. "I think I will. I'm sorry I'm so distracted, Steven."

"No, you're fine," Steven assured her ~~since his mun was irl~~. "More than understandable, I promise."

"All right, then," Nell said with a small smile. "Enjoy the tea and I'm sure I'll see you soon."
