The weather might not agree, but the cultural zeitgeist did: it was fall now. Raiden was happy to comply, and he added a note at the bottom of the specials board related to the change of the semester more than the change of the season.

"It's still hot as crap out," Steve noted, "but I admire your commitment to a theme."

"Hey, the coffee shops say it's time for pumpkin spice," Raiden said. "I'm just following their lead." You didn't want to anger Starbucks in the food service world.

"Let me get the one with the blue cheese," Steve said. "I think if I come home with another one with arugula on top, Danny'll blow a gasket."

"Sure thing, but arugula's delicious," Raiden said. "I like how the Brits call it 'rocket.' It's probably the coolest name for a vegetable."

"Rocket is an amazing name for a vegetable," Steve agreed, "but I think zucchini sounds better than courgette."

"Aubergine's kinda cool, though," Raiden mused. "They definitely don't look like an egg any more. Well. Not any kind of egg you'd wanna come across."

"I'm not eating giant purple eggs," Steve agreed. "Unless there's a lot of money involved."

"I would," Raiden admitted, because of course he would. "Figuring out the best way to cook them would be a challenge, though..."

"Right into the trash," Steve muttered.

Ugh. Eggplant.

"You've gotta be more adventurous, buddy," Raiden chided. "Which reminds me, do I need to make up a pepperoni pizza for Danny?" And his sad taste buds.

Steve sighed. "Probably. Make it really small, though. He should eat more vegetables."

"I can do a cauliflower crust," Raiden offered, everything about his bearing and tone suggesting that he would rather chop off a limb. "He might not even--no, he'll notice. Anyone who says you can't tell is deluding themselves." Flour and cauliflower did not taste the same, people.

Steve made a face. "He'd hate that more than the squash pizza."

Raiden nodded. "One small pepperoni, one acorn squash and gorgonzola. With regular crusts." Like the Supreme Being intended. "Anything else for ya?"

"Throw in an order of garlic knots to appease him?" Steve asked, grinning.
