Fandom Island Museum, Thursday Daytime

Steven was in a good mood when he got in to work that day. Not that he wanted to jinx anything but things in his life were going rather well. Even for Marc, who was a key part of why they would be going to Toronto on holiday, albeit one that was a little sooner than they had expected.

Regardless, there were museum displays to update for springtime and things to make sure to catch up on so that there wasn't too much work piling up while Steven was away.

So Steven was busy, but cheerful. He was even humming a song to himself as he did it all.

He was, of course, interruptible by any visitors. That was part of the job as well, of course.

"Good morning," Nell said, breezing in before class. "How are you today, Steven?"

"Nell, hello!" Steven said, giving her a cheerful wave. "Doing well, thank you. How are you? Happy spring by the way."

"Thank you," Nell said with a smile. "I brought you a Happy Spring plant. Freshly planted in Soulwood soil so it will grow very well. It's mint."

"Oh that's so kind of you," Steven said. "Is there instructions for how to care for it? I don't have your green thumb."

She handed him an instruction sheet with the plant. "Mint's pretty easy and it's good smelling. You can even add a sprig or two to a glass of iced tea."

"Someone knew to anticipate, yeah?" Steven said as he took the sheet. He gave it a quick squint before tucking it into a pocket to read later. "You. Thank you. Perfect timing to make sure it gets plenty of sunlight."

Nell laughed. "I mostly hand them out with all my plants. And I know sometimes you worry about things like that and I just wanted you to be able to enjoy it."

"Still thoughtful," Steven said. "It'll certainly brighten up the place. Oh! Or perhaps I'll leave it here to keep me company while I'm working."

"I'm sure it will do well here," Nell said. And if it wasn't she could always give it a little extra something when she visited.

"I rather like that idea," Steven said. "Something cheerful to keep me company as I'm working."

Steven looked at the desk and placed the pot by the brochures. "There. Perfect place to help welcome visitors. Now how are you doing?"

"I'm doing very well," Nell said. "Got to show Soulwood to Gladio this weekend. It was a lot of fun."

"It was?" Steven couldn't keep the note of surprise out of his voice. Then he adjusted. "I mean - that's good, yeah? There was no danger?"

"We went late Saturday and spent the day Sunday when I knew they'd all be at church," Nell explained.

"I see," Steven said, relaxing upon hearing it. "Very wise. Not that you and Gladio can't handle yourselves of course. But you can see why fun wasn't the first word I'd have expected? I thought it might be tense, worrying about them."

"Despite everything with the church, Soulwood is my favorite place on Earth," Nell said. "I go back regularly for short periods. I'm just careful about when and how I go."

"I see," Steven said. "I thought the trips were rarer due to the danger. I'm glad to hear that's not the case. I know how much it means to you."

"It's dangerous," Nell said, "But it's always been dangerous. I rarely go for long and I'm careful."

She shrugged a little sadly. "There's always the chance that something could happen, but it would be hard for them to organize anything large scale when they never know when I'm coming or how long I'll be. Staying for more than a day or so would be problematic,so... they're short visits. But I was glad to be able to share it with Gladio."

"That must have been very special," Steven said. "Did he get to see your home as well? Er - the building, I mean."

Steven figured that Soulwood itself was probably the place that most felt like Nell's home.

"Oh yes," Nell said. "We stayed overnight, so we had our dinner and breakfast there."

No need to say they'd slept outside. Nell's hangups would just stay between her and Gladio for the time being."

"That sounds nice," Steven said. "And Gladio liked it? And... it him?"

Steven wasn't sure if Soulwood had opinions on things but it didn't hurt to ask, he figured.

"He did and Soulwood seemed quite happy with him," Nell said with a fond smile. "Not that I expected anything different."

"Can't imagine you giving your heart to someone you couldn't trust with your soul... wood."

Steven grinned because, as always, wordplay.

Nell laughed. "Very funny. And true."

Steven looked proud of himself. "It was right there. I had to. True in both ways as well, I imagine."

"Absolutely," Nell said. "And I feel as if Soulwood is part of my soul as well."

"Did you name it?" Steven asked. "I don't think I remember if you've told me. I'm sorry if I have."

Nell shrugged. "Just seemed like that was its name."

"Well it's a lovely name," Steven said. "Do you have any plans coming up? Llewellyn and I are going on holiday again next week."

"Gladio's birthday is coming up," Nell said. "And I'm hoping to take him away somewhere he'd enjoy. As a surprise."

There might have been a brief flicker on Steven's face at the mention of birthdays, but it was quickly replaced with a smile. "Is it? How nice. What day?"

"April 2nd," Nell said. "Coming up quickly."

Steven had to quickly check the date to be sure. "That is quick! Do you know where you'll be going yet?"

"I... have some plans," Nell said, "but I'm waiting for a few last things to fall into place and I don't want to jinx it."

"Understood," Steven said, making a gesture at her to indicate no more need be said. "I shall simply wish it goes well, of course."

"Thank you," Nell said. "I'm trying to arrange a bit of a barter... Fingers crossed!"
