It was so humid. Spring in Maryland appeared to be, mostly, a myth, and a way for summer to sneak in early.
Given the holiday on Monday -- and, perhaps, some advance knowledge that Annie would not be at the bar for her shift on July 4th -- her specials seemed easy enough to conjure up.

And now to spend the rest of her shift with ice cubes pressed to the back of her neck, reminding herself that this time last year had been much worse.

Nell had known she'd never have kids with John because he couldn't, so are never really thought much about whether she'd want any or not. It just had never been a possibility.

Without much fanfare, Annie plopped the lid on the blender and fired it -- hands-free, natch -- with a bright, answering light from her eyes.

Nell took the drink and sipped at it carefully. She considered for a moment then drank a decent amount more. "This is delicious," she said. "Lovely for a hot day!"
