It was so humid. Spring in Maryland appeared to be, mostly, a myth, and a way for summer to sneak in early.

Given the holiday on Monday -- and, perhaps, some advance knowledge that Annie would not be at the bar for her shift on July 4th -- her specials seemed easy enough to conjure up.

And now to spend the rest of her shift with ice cubes pressed to the back of her neck, reminding herself that this time last year had been much worse.

"Absolutely!" Annie assured her, weirdly a little proud of Nell for actually wanting booze? It kind of reminded her of when Kimiko wanted to drink, and -- okay, wow, there was a pair of people who'd probably get along. Something to keep in mind if Kimiko visited, this year. "How's it going? Other than, like, so hot I kinda want to just melt?"

Not dramatic at all, Hargreeves, way to undersell.

"I don't mind the heat so much," Nell said. "Well, I do, but I can always go in where it's air conditioned, so that's handy!"

"This time last year I was spending as much time as I could in a kiddie pool," Annie noted, starting to pull together ingredients for Nell's drink, "so I just keep reminding myself it could be worse. It doesn't get this humid back home, generally."

Or so relentlessly, really.

"Oh yes," Nell said. "You were expecting twins. That must have been terrible. How are they holding up in the heat?"

"They only just figured out they even like playing outside in the last couple weeks anyway," Annie shared, setting up the blender, "so mostly they're staying inside in the AC. But let me tell you -- cuddling a baby in the winter? Wonderful. Nothing better. Having to cuddle a baby when it's like this?" Annie sighed. "Still worth it, but a harder sell."

"Aww," Nell smiled at her. "Not like you love your kids or anything."

Nell had known she'd never have kids with John because he couldn't, so are never really thought much about whether she'd want any or not. It just had never been a possibility.

"Must be cute watching them start to learn to play."

"We're playing a little fast and loose with the word 'play,' here," Annie admitted, grinning, "but yeah. We're kind of working on peek-a-boo these days? Like, I think they're starting to get it, but mostly I think they like laughing at us."

And considering the face-making involved in these games of peek-a-boo, that was likely the case.

Without much fanfare, Annie plopped the lid on the blender and fired it -- hands-free, natch -- with a bright, answering light from her eyes.

Nell grinned as always when Annie did her blender drink. "I think that will make it taste twice as good!"

She smiled over at Annie. "I bet you guys make the best faces."

"Diego's better at it than I am, though on that note -- have you seen Noctra with her little camera?" Annie asked, grinning playfully and rolling her eyes a little as they faded back to brown, and pouring Nell's drink for her. "I had so much fun posing for her."

"Oh, I haven't!" Nell said. "That must be adorable!"

Nell took the drink and sipped at it carefully. She considered for a moment then drank a decent amount more. "This is delicious," she said. "Lovely for a hot day!"
