It continued to be way too hot, and running into Steve at the beach yesterday had given Raiden an idea for a way to maybe spend less time by the ovens today: cold pizza.

No, not like that. Raiden didn't understand the whole 'cold pizza for breakfast' thing, because he never had leftover pizza in the first place. He'd gotten a little more creative.

"Raaaaaaaaaay," Gray whined his way into the restaurant. "It's so hoooooooot."

"Aw, Smalls, I thought you'd like it," Raiden told him. "You always complain about how cold and grey it is back home and talk about how you'd like to live somewhere sunny and warm."

And yet at the end of the series he would be one of the two brothers who didn't move out of Echo Bay. Explain yourself, author.

"Not like this!" Gray exclaimed as he dramatically draped himself over the back of a chair. "This isn't 'warm.' This is the surface of the sun! With steam."

Raiden laughed at that. "You're not wrong. Tell you what. That booth over there is right under the air conditioning vent. Go sit there and I'll bring you an ice cream pizza."

That perked Gray up somewhat. "Ice cream pizza?" Wait. "Not...it's not pizza-flavored, is it?"

"No, it's got candy. You'll like it," Raiden promised.

It wasn't too hot for Rey yet, but just barely. The humidity was doing stupid things to her hair, though, even pulled back, and she wasn't exactly excited for training.

"Okay I'm interested," she said, looking at the specials.

"Okay," Raiden said, jumping straight into his spiel, "Here's what we've got. The veggie pizza is on a flatbread, with a savory cream cheese spread and then your nice fresh veggies. I can do a mix or you can pick which ones you want. The strawberry pizza also has a cream cheese base, but it's sweet, of course, not savory, on a shortbread crust. And then the ice cream pizza is vanilla ice cream on a chocolate cookie crust, with candy and fudge sauce on top. So it has no nutritional value whatsoever, but do we really care when it's this hot? I think not."

"What would hold up best if the warehouse is disgustingly hot?" Rey asked. "So not the ice cream one."

"Probably the veggie one," Raiden told her. "The cream cheese shouldn't be left out indefinitely, but it should be okay for a while." He was a little vague on how food poisoning happened, since it never happened to him, but he was pretty sure on that? "The strawberries would probably start weeping in this heat, though. Vegetables will hold up better."

"Let's do the vegetable one then," Rey decided. "It might not last long anyway since it's something cold to eat."

"An excellent choice," Raiden assured her. "Do you have any particular favorite vegetables you'd like us to put on it, or just surprise you?"

"Surprise me. I love them all," she said.

That's what happens when you grow up somehow not malnutritioned.

"They are all winners," Raiden agreed. "That'll be out in a few. What've you been up to lately, besides 'trying not to melt'? Oh! And if I threw a dinner party, you would come, right?"

"Absolutely," she said immediately. "Are you having one?"

[carbsliftthespirit]

"I've been thinking about it for a while," Raiden admitted. "I just...we didn't have guests over back home--long story--so I don't really know what I'm doing. But I'm thinking fried chicken and all the sides." And when he said all the sides you knew that he meant all of them.

"That sounds amazing," she said. "You should definitely do it. And if you need any help..."

Don't let her, she couldn't season.

Then she needed to learn how to season! Raiden could teach her. Seasoning was so important, Rey. "I'll keep you in mind!" he promised. "But I'll probably do it all myself. I'm used to sort of having my own way in the kitchen." Because most of his brothers were useless enough to get themselves kicked out eventually.

Please. Please teach her.

"I'm always impressed with how you manage to do all that on your own," she told him.

"Ah," Raiden waved that off. "When you've been cooking for seven hungry guys for a couple of millennia it'll come natural to you, too." Wait. Human lifespan. "But it doesn't take anywhere near that long to pick up some good tricks!"

"I'd be happy to pick up tricks. What they do on Food Network always looks good."

This was what she used TV for. Watching food.

Raiden fully supported that use of TV, although he also enjoyed sports and action movies, because he was a true bro type. "Y'know, I enjoy Chopped as much as the next guy, but I do kinda miss when Food Network had more programming that actually taught you how to cook stuff. You ever watch Good Eats?"

"I have not," she said, immediately interested. "What's that?"

[carbsliftthespirit]

"It's a show that used to be on Food Network. The host was really into science and he was pretty good about explaining why you do all the stuff you do when you're cooking. Plus it was funny," Raiden told her in tones of fond reminiscence. "I even learned a thing or two from that show. Chemistry, who knew? I'm sure it's streaming somewhere, or at least I hope so. Or there's always piracy."

Not that kind of piracy; they didn't need Flint.
