The sun had just dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the beach as the first notes of music from Arden’s playlist filled the air. The waves gently lapped at the shore, creating a soothing backdrop to the area. Tiki torches and string lights were set up around the party area, their flickering and colorful light adding to the atmosphere.

The aroma of North Carolina barbecue filled the air, with a long table set up with all the fixings—pulled pork, coleslaw, hush puppies, and more. For those with different tastes, vegetarian and vegan dishes were also thoughtfully provided. Sweet tea was the main beverage, but for those craving something colder, Squishies were lined up next to the drinks cooler. The centerpiece of it all was a giant cupcake that Graham had brought all the way from Daventry for the occasion.

Games were scattered around the beach: volleyball nets, cornhole, frisbees, and even a few board games for those who preferred to sit back and relax. A bonfire crackled nearby, with cozy spots to sit and chat, perfect for those who wanted to enjoy the evening at a slower pace.

It was set up for a perfect evening, filled with good food, great company, and the kind of fun that comes from being surrounded by people. Yes, it was another surprise party, the kind that shouldn’t be a surprise anymore, really. But that’s the point of parties—to celebrate the people you care about. And tonight, it was all about Arden.

Oh, they were hugging? They didn't do much friendly hugging in the Regency, but Lydia could go with it. "And I could not have asked for a better little sister, I am sure," Lydia told her. "And look at this lovely party you've put together!"

Kamala smiled and shrugged. "It was for Arden so really it was no trouble at all," she said as if was just a simple thing. "I got that Dean guy to bring food and Graham brought the cake. All I really did was string up lights and light a fire. However..."

She smiled a bit more mischievously at Lydia. "I don't know when your birthday is. And that needs to be rectified."

"Oh!" Lydia said. "Yes, of course. It's the twenty-eighth of June. Depending on when Eleanor's birthday is, I think I may be the eldest of our little group." It was quite novel!

"Well then you can probably expect a party for you sometime in June," Kamala declared with genuine enthusiasm. "And I promise it will be a completely appropriate theme that you will enjoy."

No barbecue or karaoke! Promise!

Lydia might come to like those things by next June. Who could say? The barbecue was quite tasty, after all. "I shall look forward to it. Oh! Do you happen to know when Eleanor's birthday is? And...if she happens to have a favorite animal or perhaps flower?" Flower would be easier, actually. Lydia had embroidered so many flowers in her day.

"Oh, it's July 1st," Kamala said with a firm nod. "And I know she really likes dragon lilies but I'm not sure about the animal. I'd say a sloth but that's a bit too egotistical of me and really shouldn't have said that out loud. If I find out, I'll let you know."
