Caritas; Wednesday [12/11].

Summer pretty much knew what to expect today when she came into the bar. She had, after all, spent whatever time she wasn't using to make jello shots for tonight or do some online holiday shopping trying to prevent her cat for torturing the small balls of sugar rolling around and making disturbingly cute little sounds at her every chance they got.

It had been an ongoing battle, and she was sure she was going to return to a sentient-sugarball massacre in her apartment when she got home tonight, but, right now, she was just watching the balls rolling around the bar and having a grand old time, giggling and leaving trails of sugar everywhere.

"I hope you know," she stated, plainly and clearly, as she looked at Tino a moment before finally breaking out of her distraction to get to work, "that I'm not cleaning any of that up tonight."

She started cleaning a glass and then paused.

"Wait," she realized, "if they're going to just disappear tomorrow, does that mean the mess they leave behind will, too?"

That would make things so much easier, but she still kind of hoped that at least Tino still had to clean something up.

It was good for him! It built character!

"We did that last year, for Christmas," Stark said. "I think she was surprised I managed to plan it all. But maybe for my birthday? I don't know. I'm sure we'll go somewhere warm this winter. Will you be here? For the holiday?"

"Oh yes, we just bought our tree yesterday," Liliana said, a soft smile she could not fight down tugging at her lips. "We might choose to vacation somewhere in between Christmas and the New Year, but we'll spend the holiday at home."

"Oh. We should get a tree. Trees? One for my apartment at least. I hung some lights already. I like the little lights. They're...cheerful."

And extra light in winter never went amiss.

"Will you be at the party Friday?"

With the world's ugliest necromancer sweater maybe?

Festive attire was not the same as ugly Christmas sweaters and absolutely not. Liliana had protested the enforced ugly sweatering by eschewing clothes entirely on Saturday.

"Of course, darling. I can't not go and see what new chandelier Tony and Steve have chosen. Besides, they would be positively bereft without me. And you are going, I presume."

Of course that was how Liliana had dealt with it. Of course.

"I wonder how many chandeliers this time. And yes, I'm going. We're going. As far as I know."

Sure, it was possible something might come up but it seemed unlikely.

Was there a better way? Liliana thought not.

And hey! There were plenty of animalings happening around now. Who could say what might happen between tonight and Friday?

"Is Summer going as a bartender? Or getting to enjoy herself as a guest?"

Stark had just accepted his cozy but hideous fate.

"She hasn't said," he said. "So I hope just to enjoy?"

The day Liliana meekly accepted any fate beyond what she wanted was...well, okay there was no such day. Nor should there be.

"I really ought to speak with her and see if she has a preference overall," Liliana mused.

"Are you planning another party soon?" Stark asked. "I know she enjoys bartending. She wouldn't do it otherwise. We even left for Ireland, for her birthday, that weekend instead of on the actual day so she could go in to the bar. But she enjoys not having to work as well."

Who didn't enjoy some time off, really?

"Likely not for a few months," Liliana said. "I'm not sure I wish to devote New Year's Eve to actually hosting anything. Perhaps something in the darker days of winter to remind everyone that spring is coming."

Where 'everyone' meant 'Liliana herself.'

"There is usually something at Caritas for that," Stark pointed out. "For New Year's Eve. But something in the winter, later in the winter, that would be good."

Maybe February would bring a trip somewhere warm with the school, too?

"Are there winter holidays like that, where you're from? Light in the darkness and reminders of warmth?"

Liliana's face softened slightly. "Yes," she said. "In Benalia, the country I was born in, we have a holiday held on the longest night of the year, celebrating light and the coming of longer days. I don't know if all of Dominaria celebrated that, but it was one of the most important holidays for us."
