Caritas - Open [6/27]

Veronica was still running on nerves and caffeine when she got to work. She was grateful to see Tino was back from wherever he'd been, though he snorted at her when she asked if he'd had a nice vacation.

Aaron hadn't appeared to her again since Anakin chased him off. She was hoping that was a good sign, even though Piper hadn't been able to help her.

It took her a moment to figure out who that was. "Oh. Dios, I'm sorry. What--do you know why?"

"No," Veronica said. "And Piper couldn't find anything in the book to get rid of him."

"There's got to be something we can do, though. I know A--the other guy was pretty upset, too."

Veronica's jaw dropped. The way Archie had been acting yesterday... she wondered...

"Did you listen to radio last night?" she asked, since she hadn't.

"Not very closely. It was that crazy hooker and she was pretty drunk."

"I'm just wondering... maybe it's not just me and your friend," Veronica said.

"You mean, like it could be some kind of . . . epidemic of ghosts?" Nadia shook her head. "Well, this is Fandom. It's definitely possible."

Veronica nodded. "It's possible. I think maybe I know of another person who might be having a problem."

"Then we've definitely got to do something. Who can we talk to who might know about ghosts?"

"I don't know," Veronica replied. "Piper only found a spell to summon a spirit, which, well, so not an issue. And she did find a spell to vanquish a ghost, but it only works if it's said by a spirit."

Nadia thumped her hand down on the bar. "This town is full of people who know all kinds of weird things. There's got to be someone we could talk to."

"We'll figure it out," Veronica said. "Now that I know it's not just me... we can find out who else is having problems and get help."

"Good. Do you think he'll come back in the meantime? Aaron Echolls, I mean? I just wish there was something I could do to help, if he does."

"I think maybe Anakin scared him away. He was probably surprised that someone besides me could see him," Veronica said.

Veronica heard him snickering before she saw him on the bar stool.

"You think the boy with the funky hair would scare me?"

His laugh was harsh and bitter.

"Pour me a double shot of your best single malt," Aaron demanded. "Oh, wait, I'm dead because of you, you little bitch. I can't enjoy a drink."

Veronica covered her eyes and willed him to go away.

Nadia blinked at Veronica's sudden change in demeanor. "Veronica? Are you okay?"

She shook her head.

"He's here."

Nadia tried to look around while looking like she wasn't looking around. "He is? Where?"

Aaron rolled his eyes. "She can't see me, you stupid bitch. I still don't now how your little friend did this morning."

"Down there," Veronica said, pointing to the stool at the end.

Nadia glanced over, frowning. "Okay, should I assume that the fact that all I see is an empty stool is because he's a ghost?" She leaned forward to grab Veronica's hand. "Remember, Anakin said he can't hurt you. Don't even listen to him."

"Right," Veronica said, taking a deep breath and studiously avoiding looking in that direction.

"Should I order a drink? Take your mind off . . . things?"

"Sure, what can I get you?" Veronica asked.
