Veronica was still running on nerves and caffeine when she got to work. She was grateful to see Tino was back from wherever he'd been, though he snorted at her when she asked if he'd had a nice vacation.

Aaron hadn't appeared to her again since Anakin chased him off. She was hoping that was a good sign, even though Piper hadn't been able to help her.

"Wrong," Cally said, finishing off her Shirley Temple. "I did exactly what I'm supposed to."

"It means a lot," Veronica said. "I'm not used to having friends who stick by me when things get tough. Well, at least not before I came here."

Cally frowned. She growled in the direction Veronica had pointed earlier.

"No fair, motherfrakker. Leave her alone!"

Veronica reached for Cally's hand and ignored Aaron's snickers.

"Thank you."

Cally squeezed Veronica's hand. "S'what I'm here for," she said.

Of course, if she was trying to confront a threat that was more physical, Cally would've been singing a different tune. But she was able to be plenty brave given the situation.
