Caritas, Saturday Evening

Ellen went into work a little late, having been on the phone half the day, talking Ash through clean-up on a minor fire. He was okay (and Ellen had some suspicions on how he'd managed to start a fire in his room, of all places), but she felt better that he'd called her immediately, even if she was already feeling tired just from hearing him so anxious.

In honor of the "occasion", she put up a sign as she opened the bar.

"Might depend on if you're looking for taste or sheer ability to screw you over," Ellen said with a wry smile, looking at the new guy ~~hello, salty goodness~~.

"At the moment, I no longer care about taste. I remember being able to get drunk," he added wistfully. "It was fun." ~~You're not so bad-looking yourself.~~

"On occasion," Ellen agreed, tilting her head as she thought. "But usually the getting there was more fun than the being."

She pulled out a tall glass and added Everclear after the ice, topped off with Southern Comfort, rum and pineapple juice. "Try this."

Steve took a sip and nodded. "Even if it doesn't work, it's good. Thank you."

"It's what I do," Ellen said, smiling faintly. "You new here? I don't remember seeing you come in before."

"I just got into town yesterday," Steve told her. He offered his hand and said, "Steve Rogers."

She took his hand, shaking firmly with a nod. "Ellen Harvelle. Nice to meet you, Steve," she said. "You setting up shop, or you with the school?"

"I'm the new art teacher, actually," Steve told her. "Or, well, arts and crafts for the summer."

"Then welcome to Fandom," she said, smiling. "I hear teaching's quite an adventure up there on the hill."

"I'm getting that impression already," Steve said dryly. "Do you happen to know what happened to the school? I was under the impression it was still standing very recently."

Ellen sighed. "Aliens. They apparently decided to visit for graduation," she said. "Scared the hell out of me - I've got a daughter up there. But the dorms were fine, just the school building fell, apparently."

"Aliens." Yes, this was going to be a nice, restful change of pace. He was going to kill Nick Fury. Slowly. "Can I get another one of these?" he asked, holding up his glass.

Ellen poured him a second and gave him a sympathetic look. "Fandom's not what most people expect when they get here, but it has its charm."

"It's got to be better than being dead," he muttered.

"Sorry?" Ellen frowned slightly, not sure she heard right.

"I uh," Steve began. "Long story. I got shot a lot."

Ellen looked at him again, as if trying to decide where. "Sorry to hear that," she said. "How long, if I may ask?"

The limp when he'd come in might have been a hint, for a starter. "About two months ago. I don't recommend it."

"Two months?" Ellen shook her head. "Hope you weren't looking for a place to relax, Steve. I like Fandom, but restful it's not, really."
