Everything was set for Mary's birthday party. The ballroom was filled with enough tables for everyone to sit down for dinner. There was a bar set up in the corner of the room and in the opposite corner was a table with a very large 5-tier birthday cake, which Gunther currently had two of his assistants guarding. Just in case Wolfgang Puck showed up to exact revenge for Gunther destroying the Deline wedding cake last year.

The room was lit with candles that gave everything a soft glow and every table had an arrangement of white roses that matched with the ivory tablecloths. If it happened to look similar to the reception Mary had planned last year for Delinda Deline's wedding, that was just a coincidence. The theme tonight was "Everything Old Is New Again" and the wait staff were dressed as if they came straight from Las Vegas circa 1962, complete with fedora hats for the men and beehive hairdos for the women. Even Mary was wearing a vintage dress. The newly-installed state of the art sound system would be playing the best hits of the Rat Pack all evening and there was a dance floor set up at the far end of the room.

The blush was cute as hell.

"She doesn't hate you, Johnny. She's just... she's a bit protective of me. She hasn't seen me in awhile and when we were apart... things happened. So... she's over-protective and worried about me getting hurt or kidnapped again."

"Okay, that's understandable - wait, you were kidnapped?"

Savannah shrugged slightly. "Yeah... and it suddenly occurs to me that telling you stuff that has happened has got to be a real turn off.

"What? Are you kidding me? We're friends right? How are we supposed to learn about each other if we don't, well, learn about each other?"

Friends.

Savannah nodded. "Of course we're friends," she said with a smile. "Well, you keep asking stuff about me, but you don't tell me very much about you, you know."

Every relationship started with being friends. Of course it did.

He grinned, "What would you like to know?" he finished off his glass of champagne and set it aside, leading her to a small table so they could sit and talk more comfortably.

Savannah sat down. "Well, I know you have a sister... and you know someone who calls himself Mr. Fantastic." She really did think that was the dumbest name ever. "And that you missed a week of school to go to your biking event -- which I have yet to hear about." She gave him a teasing grin.

Johnny thought it was the dumbest name ever too. I mean, pleeeese.

"It was awesome, Savannah! I've got pictures! You'll have to come by my room so I can show you sometime!" Eager? A little.

"I definitely want to see those pictures, Johnny," she said with a smile, liking how excited he was. "That reminds me, I got you a birthday present while you were gone, so I'll have to make sure I bring that, too."

"No you didn't..." he said, totally surprised. "Savannah, you didn't have to do that, really." And he blushed, he couldn't help it.

"I wanted to, so I did." She reached out and ran a hand through his hair. "I know it wasn't expected." She pulled her hand back and fiddled with her glass.

Her touch was sweet and he took her hand after she moved it to her glass and held it, rubbing his thumb back and forth across the top. "Thanks, Savannah, really."

"You're welcome," she said, smiling as his thumb moved back and forth. "Birthdays are important... and I wanted to make sure you had something nice for yours."

"I got to do my supercross. I was happy." he said. Alone, but happy.

"That's all well and good, but that was something you got for yourself. I wanted you to have something nice that someone else had thought to get for you."

She was a little sad that he had been all alone.

"That is..." he had no words really. "You're the only one...I mean my sister sent me a card...but..." He just shut up because he was feeling dorkily embarrassed.

Savannah leaned over and kissed him a little shyly. When she sat back, she smiled.

"I'm full of surprises, Johnny."

Her guardians had made sure that her birthday was never forgotten, and she had decided that Johnny's wouldn't be forgotten, either.

Oh. That kiss was nice. It made him feel warm. Johnny looked at Savannah, at her pretty blue eyes, then at her mouth, and he leaned towards her his hand going to her cheek... "Kiss me again," he asked softly.

Savannah looked at him and then leaned forward. She kissed him again, slowly and gently.

Johnny's mouth was warm, his lips curious as he kissed her, allowing his tongue to dip past his lips to taste of her.

Savannah's lips parted slightly, and she explored his mouth. Her movements were slow and a little shy, but she was really enjoying the feel of his lips against hers.
