Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 10/27. ]

He might not have thought so at the time, but working the store with Orihime had been a lot of fun for Chad, making it a little bittersweet to have the place so quiet and calm and chill today.

The very smooth jazz playing from the speakers probably only highlighted the feel, but it felt nice. It had been a good weekend.

Really, she should have stopped by on Friday, but Hinata thought that considering the weekend... it was alright.

"Good morning, Chad-san," she said, smiling as she slipped in.

"Hinata-san," Chad nodded in greeting to her, idly scratching at Prince Oscar Pedro's head as the cat seemed to be making a firm choice to take up as much of the counter as his thin, hairless body could. "How was your weekend?"

"Better than I w-would have thought," she said, leaning against the counter. "My father was p-pleased. Good m-morning, Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun. And how w-was yours?"

Prince Oscar Pedro let out a long, giant yawn in response, stretching out even more, before ducking away from Chad's fingers to go and sniff at Hinata a little.

"Mine was good, too," he said. "I didn't expect anyone, but my friend from home surprised me. It was a nice surprise."

She let the cat sniff at her for a moment before trying to pet him.

"I'm s-sorry to have missed meeting a friend of yours," she said. "But I am g-glad your weekend was g-good."

Prince Oscar Pedro was already shoving his head into Hinata's hand before it even got there.

Chad, meanwhile, gave Hinata a small smile. "You would have liked her," he thought, "and she'd have liked you; I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet your family, either."

Hinata grinned a bit at that, before her focus went to petting Prince Oscar. "D-Don't," she said, marveling at her audacity in saying that about her father. "It w-went well, but I wouldn't wish t-them on anyone. Maybe Hanabi, but not my f-father."

Hanabi, at nine, was a lot easier to deal with when her father wasn't around.

"Oh," Chad said, his rumble almost buried under the competing rumble of Prince Oscar Pedro's purrs, "He couldn't be that bad..."

That got almost a rueful smile. "He is not," Hinata said. "So long a-as you don't disappoint h-him."

"Have you had cause to?" Chad asked, frowning slightly and really hoping the answer was no.

She flushed, looking down. "He is n-not often happy with m-me."

Chad's frown deepened more. "Why wouldn't he be?" he asked, after trying to think of what about Hinata could cause disappointment. Sure, she wasn't the most outgoing or bouncy girl, like Inoue-san, but Chad was quiet and shy in his own right, too, and, actually, these had been a chance in his personality, a change for the better.

"N-Never good enough," she said quietly, smiling at Prince Oscar as she continued to pet him. "My s-sister, who is five years younger, has w-won every spar we've had. My c-cousin is a genius, I a-am... merely proficient. My t-temperament is too meek to e-ever lead, he s-says, and yet I a-am the one who w-was born first."

Chad grunted slightly. "That's always something you can work on, though, right?" he asked, and, a moment later, added, "It's the quiet ones you always gotta watch out for anyway, isn't it?"

"I t-try," Hinata said, almost agreement. "T-Though he views things d-differently."

"Just have to prove him wrong, then, I guess," Chad offered, with a slight shrug as if to help give the situation a little less significance; he doubted there was anything he could really say on the topic to make Hinata feel better about it, though.

That got a bit of a smile directed towards him. "I d-don't go back on my word," Hinata said. "For that is m-my way as a ninja."

"That's a pretty good rule to have even for those of us who aren't ninja."

"Mm," she said. "I l-learned it from a... boy, b-back home."

"Friend of yours?" Chad asked.

She flushed rosily. "I w-would like to be."

"He doesn't consider you a friend?" Chad asked, confused, finding it hard to see why anyone wouldn't want to be friends with someone as nice as Hinata.

Naruto was slow.

"He's l-left the village for the next few y-years," she explained. "So it's h-hard to say."

So was Chad.

"I'm sure he does," he decided. "Did he leave on, like, a quest or something?"

"Mm," she said, with a shake of her head. "A t-training mission. To get s-stronger."

Chad nodded with an understanding grunt, remembering a time when Ichigo did that same thing, while he and Orihime also worked on trying to cultivate their powers a little better. "Those're always really helpful."

She looked rueful. "I h-hope so," Hinata said. "Though they're l-lonely to those left b-behind."

Chad could see that, too. Faint traces of Asano's rant when they returned from the Soul Society filtered through his head, and he couldn't help a small grunt, grinning faintly.

"It'll be good, though. It makes seein' 'em again even better."

"True," she agreed, seemingly pleased enough with that. "I brought you the b-book, I promised."

"Book?" Chad asked, then blinked, and his sluggish memory finally caught up with him. "Oh. The one you were reading at the sleepover, right?"

"That's the o-one," she said, "Idlewild. Unless you d-didn't want to read it any l-longer?"

"Oh, no, I would," Chad grunted. "I just..."

"Memory." He shrugged. "I'd love to still read it, so long as you're done."

Hinata nodded. "I am d-done," she promised him, setting the book (http://www.amazon.ca/Idlewild-Nick-Sagan/dp/0451461983/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225155550&sr=1-2) on the counter. "And I h-hope you'll like it t-though it's not... not t-the sort for everyone."

"Did it have a good ending?" Chad asked, pulling the book in across the counter and picking it up to give the covers a look-over.

"It ended..." she paused, turning it over in her head. "S-Sad, but triumphant? A bit p-peaceful but with s-so much left undone that real p-peace would have b-been a lie."

"It'll be interesting to see how you mean," Chad said with a faint smile. "Would you recommend any particular type of music to listen to when I read it for extra atmosphere?"

Yes, Chad was that much of a music dork.

To her credit, Hinata seriously considered that.

"I w-would go with something i-instrumental rather than anything w-with vocals," she said thoughtfully. "And n-nothing particularly bright. Other than that..."

Hinata shrugged slightly.

Chad nodded, already coming up with a few ideas.

It involved a lot of violin.

"Thanks, Hinata-san."

"My p-pleasure," she said, grinning a bit. "Y-You'll have to tell me what you t-think of it, at some point."
