Chad was still occasionally finding pieces of broken CDs from when Nana was here on Friday scattered this way and that, although well hidden under shelves or drum kits. Really, it was Prince Oscar Pedro who found most of the remaining ones, stalking around the store, his body low and lean as it crouched close to the floor, hunting them down and then proceeding to chase and play with them all over the place. He'd lose it underneath the counter or a listening chair, and the hunt would begin again.

Chad found it utterly fascinating to watch, and his head provided a commentary as if it were all just another episode of Carnivorous Kingdom.

Chad had to shake his head a little again, blinking, but, at the same time, he knew he couldn't deny it. Pop was some of his best selling stuff, after all. When people came in and didn't ask for help, anyway.

He moved out from behind the counter, waving the guy to follow him. "Come on; I'll show you some R&B stuff, then."

Priestly nodded, moving to follow after. "Cool."

"So, were you looking to take her in any particular direction, or just a general introduction to things better than...that."

Which counted as pretty much anything.

"She's from ninety-one, dude. She's got almost twenty years of catch-up to do. I figured a good overview would be nice?" He shrugged. "I figure she'll love the riot grrrls, so something leading that way, maybe."

"Focus on some of the more notable female artists, then?" Chad wondered, which was good, because his preference in R&B tended to lie that way, anyway.

"A little more amazing voice, a little less gangsta cursing?"

"Exactly," Chad nodded with a grunt. "And experimentation with the music, the beats. R&B's originally rhythm and blues, remember. Got to have a soul."

"Oh, yeah, totally." Priestly didn't know a damned thing about R&B. Ask him about wailing guitars and screaming.

Chad let out a grunt of agreement, and they'd made it toward the section he'd wanted.

"Okay, so, contemporary stuff, right? After '91? Got to have some Blige, Aaliyah, TLC, fill in all the good nineties gaps. Maybe some Erika Badu and Fugees stuff...Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, if you want to throw in some soul. More recent stuff, best best is some Alicia Keyes, Usher's got some good stuff. Can take it a little funkier and throw in some Santagold. If she's from '91, she might pick up on M.I.A. a bit...."

He could go on.

And on.

And on...

Priestly recognized that tone. It was the same tone Trucker got when going on about the sixties. The same one he himself probably got when talking about Bad Religion or Sleater-Kinney.

"Cool. Is there any kind of good mix CD or something? I dunno if I can afford separate albums of all of that."

"Umm...."

Chad thought through all the R&B and dance and hip hop compilation CDs that had come through his very scrutinizing gaze. He even tried to think through some soundtracks.

He was coming up really short, and shook his head.

"I'll put together something for you," he offered.

Spreading very good music was infinitely more important than actual business.

Priestly blinked. "Seriously? Can you do that?"

Chad looked confused for a moment. "Why couldn't I?"

"I dunno. Most people would think you should be trying to get me to spend more money."

"And risk sticking you with some crap pop-picked compilation CD? No way, man."

Chad thought about it again and a subtle shiver wracked his tall body.

"No. Way."

Priestly nodded and grinned. "Right on, man. I appreciate it."

"No problem, man; Chad, by the way."

"Priestly. I think I've seen you around up at school?"

"Probably," Chad agreed with a nod. "I think I remember seeing you at the picnic, too."

"I tend to be hard to miss," Priestly said proudly.
