Luke's Diner, April 13 (Monday)

Lacey had heard all about the kid invasion this time, oh, yes. For once. Yes, she was shocked too.

That was why the buffet table was set out today, loaded down with mac and cheese, Jell-O, and other kid-friendly foods, and Lacey herself was being as scarce as possible. It wasn't that she didn't think the kids were cute; there was just a risk of balloons.

Today's Special
Kids' Buffet Time!

Luke's is open and liable to get a little messy today.

"I think there was a Luke here once. Like, my uncle Luke," Jess said. "One of those weird things, like when people are here and they know each other, but they're not really from the same time? I know it sounds crazy. Talking about this place is really starting to make me feel crazy too."

"This place isn't crazy. It's great!" Jared said, bouncing in his seat. "Can I get a cheeseburger? And a soda?"

"You can get a cheeseburger and some milk, or juice," Jess replied. That seemed like something a good parent would say.

Joan smiled at that. It was totally a good parent thing. "So you like Fandom, huh? Better than Stars Hollow?"

"Stars Hollow is the best," Jared said. "But there's no people with wings unless it's the Christmas pageant day."

"Do they have pageants and town meetings led by a tyrant with a gavel?" Jess asked. "Because that might be better than Stars Hollow."

"Stars Hollow is kind of special," Jess said, in case she hadn't picked up on that yet. "But, I guess it's not the worst place ever to have a family."

"Nope, you both love it there," Jared informed them. "But Grandpa Will hates visiting cause Miss Patty gets handsy."

He had no idea what that meant. "I like Miss Patty."

"Yeah, well, we'll see how much you like her when you get older and she tries matchmaking you with every girl in town," Jess said.

Joan was trying really hard not to laugh at the mental image of someone hitting on her dad. "What does Grandma Helen think?" she asked.

"She says that people are busybodies," Jared said. "But I dunno why. They're the same kind of busy as people in Arcadia."

"A busybody is someone who likes to know what everyone is doing," Jess explained. "Which, you know, is pretty much everyone in Stars Hollow except Uncle Luke."

"Cause you have to do weird stuff sometimes," Jared said. "And everyone in Stars Hollow does weird stuff alla time!"

"And Daddy says it's far enough away that Grandpa Will can't hurt him," Jared said. "Why do you think Grandpa Will is gonna hurt you, Daddy?"

Jess could think of quite a few reasons, but he wasn't sure how many were really true, and how many could be shared in front of a child. "It's probably because he loves your mom very much, and he wants to make sure I take care of her," he said. "It's a dad thing."

"But you do take good care of me and mommy!" Jared said.

Joan smiled at that. "Well, then it's probably just your dad being silly."

"Yeah, I can be silly sometimes too," Jess said, getting quiet for a moment before asking, "I take really good care of you guys?"

Jared nodded. "'course you do, Daddy! Uncle Luke says he's glad Mommy keeps you in line."

That made Joan laugh.

That got a laugh out of Jess as well, and much more of a smile. He wasn't positive that he had the potential to be a good father, but he had a lot more confidence than ever before now.

"I'd say you and I are both lucky to have your mom," he said, smirking at Joan.
