Park, Thursday Morning

With graduation this weekend, the school expected most of the graduation guests to begin arriving today. So, to make sure they felt welcomed, the student council had set up a small gathering in the park where the guests could arrive, mingle and relax before heading off with their guests and friends.

There were finger foods on a long table and nametags on the table beside it. Chairs were set out for people to sit and talk if they so wanted.

It was time to get graduation weekend rolling!

[This is just a tiny mingling posts for all grad guests, alums, expats, students, teachers and townies to meet up and talk a little. There's going to be a garage sale later and we encourage you all to go to that as well!]

Amber spotted him easily and took right to him. "Liir, hi, my ma is here. And Loretta." She spoke quickly because fast on her heels was her ma. Loretta took off somewhere and Amber wasn't going to guess as to where.

Liir gave her a short bow and smiled shyly at her.

"Hello, Mrs. Atkins. It's a pleasure to meet you. Your daughter has spoken very well of you."

He blushed a little.

"I'm sorry it's taken to long to say hello."

"Honey, I ain't married. Just call me Annette," she smirked. He was polite, she'd give him that.

"Yah, well, she should. I raised her."

She raised her hook of a hand. "You two's goin' steady then, right?"

"I told you we were already, ma," Amber said, embarrassed.

"We've been seeing each other for a while now," he admitted with a faint blush at his cheeks.

"And we hope to continue things even after she, er, leave the island. I care for your daughter very much."

He wanted to touch her. He wasn't sure if he should, though.

Annette continued to eye the boy. He was sweet if she had to label him. Tall too. Easy on the eyes.

"Ain't you a real doll. He's a doll, Amber. You should keep him. Come here and give ma a hug." She opened her arms.

Amber was beaming at Liir. She hadn't even really heard her ma.

He looked to Amber for a quick reassurance that this was all right before leaning forward to pull her into a hug. He was rather good at hugging, really, so hopefully he'd pass muster.

Annette wouldn't care if Amber minded. She latched onto the boy and hugged him tight, careful of her hook. That's when she asked, "You sleepin' with my girl, Liir?"

Re: Mingling

He'd seen that coming, mostly from the way Amber had mentioned her mother. His whisper in reply was simple and soft.

"We both sleep better together than alone."

Let her take from it what she wanted. It was the truth and, to him, the most important thing.

He pulled back with a small smile at Annette.

Amber wasn't sure she understood the look her ma was giving Liir when she pulled away from him, but she smiled and nodded, so all seemed okay.

"So, yay! We're together and happy and I'm graduating ma!" She couldn't decide if she was happy or sad and reached for Liir's hand to hold. She needed the comfort oh my god.

"Yah, I know it monkey. Just as long as you're not graduating pregnant, for chrissake."

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Liir looked almost stricken before shaking his head, even more pale than usual.

"I'd never do something to harm Amber's chances at a good future," he said firmly. She could take what she liked from that as well.

Amber was so red, so embarrassed. Liir was going to hate her family. Not want to have anything to do with her anymore.

"Ma," she hissed. "Stop it."

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] smartestdrunks.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"See that you don't," Annette said to Liir.

Then she smiled. "Ah, pipe down, Amber. I'm just doin' what mothers do best. You're eighteen today - happy birthday, monkey - and that's like tellin' the world you're free." Or something.

"Liir, you're family ain't carnies, are they?"

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Liir gave Amber's hand a light squeeze, leaned over to kiss her cheek, and whispered "It's all right; she's just worried about you" before leaning back.

"No. My mother was a Witch and my father was a tribal Prince. I'm reasonably sure neither of those would be considered 'carnies'. In fact, I'm reasonably sure we don't even have 'carnies' where I come from."

Then he blinked.

"Oh, and happy Birthday, Amber. Your, er, present and such is back at the room."

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She could argue that 'worried about you', because her ma had a weird way of showing it. She clung to his hand.

"Thank you, Liir. We'll head back there is just a little while, okay?"

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] smartestdrunks.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're a prince?" Annette wasn't entirely bright. But in her book prince equaled rich. That was important.

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit.

"Officially, yes."

He shared a glance at Amber before he made a quick decision.

He'd be honest.

"Officially, I stand to govern nearly half of the country I come from."

Amber knew the truth, of course. At least, he was reasonably sure she did. And it wasn't as if he was lying.

And if it sounded good to her mother, made her think of him well, then it was a 'lie' well told.

"Though I would appreciate your discretion."

He wasn't insane, however.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber stared at Liir. She knew about the prince part, she didn't know about the govering nearly half the country, what?!

She was so not worthy, oh my god.

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Only officially oh sweet Lurline, not in reality! How well was 'I was homeless before I came here and before that, I worked for my mother, the crazy monkey-loving terrorist!' going to sound, after all?

He gave Amber a 'calm down, please, I'll explain' look before smiling at Annette.

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] smartestdrunks.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Goddamn! Way to pick 'em Amber. Her last boyfriend? Somethin' just wasn't quite right about that boy. I suppose he was nice enough, though."

She grinned wide. "This calls for a drink! And hell, you bein' a prince and all, I might not care if ya knock up my daughter! Hah! Least we'll be taken care of!"

Yep, she included herself in there.

Re: Mingling

Oh yes, he thought to himself morosely, because that had worked out so well for Sarima. And his mother, of course.

"I'll treat, if they aren't complimentary," he said delicately. After all, it would be a small price to pay to see her drunk and hopefully occupied.

He turned and gave Amber a small smile, partially begging for forgiveness and partially wondering if he'd done the right thing.

Re: Mingling

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber seriously just wished the ground would open her up and swallow her whole.

But she smiled, even if her lips felt like they were trembling to keep it in place.

She looked at Liir, apologized with her eyes.
