Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Evening

Tyler paced the gym barefoot as the fighters assembled. "Graduates," he began. "Students. Teachers. People who work in town. Miscellaneous others. Welcome to fight club."

"We're glad to have you here," Ghanima continued smoothly. "But if you're here, you fight. If, for some reason you cannot fight, we ask you stay towards the back. This isn't a place for voyeurism. If you want a show, go find a television."

"Ghanima, you speak my language," Tyler informed her., before turning back to the group. "Two people to a fight, fights end when someone goes limp or says stop. We are not trying to kill each other here; we're trying to train. We're trying to improve. Got questions, ask one of us." He looked at his cohort. "Anything else?"

"Rules are on the door," she said crisply, "but we're happy to answer any inquires you may have."

"Now go hit the mats or go home."

"I went here for a while," Tyler answered. "Sophomore year. Did this once and it was like fighting was a sick cow and everyone was a piranha. We're a pretty fight-hungry bunch when we aren't being invaded."

Tahiri wasn't sure what piranhas were, but she got the gist of the statement. "Guess the rest of them missed out," she remarked, brushing a stray lock of hair back from her forehead. "I like that you and Professor Atreides put this together, though. It's . . . useful."

"People seem to like it, and they seem to get better," Tyler said. "That's all I can ask for. It's an old idea; Ghanima -- Professor Atreides -- just talked me into putting it into practice here."

A second later, he added, "I'm sorry. I try to remember everybody's names at these things but they go right out of my head. It's Tyler."

"Tahiri," she answered with a slight smile. "You taught history this last term, didn't you?"

"Guilty as charged, Tahiri," Tyler said easily. "Right now I'm working in the gym, though. I figure I need some time away from warping young minds."

An odd look flickered through Tahiri's eyes for just a moment. "I'm sure the young minds appreciate it."

"I'm not that bad a teacher," Tyler said, defensiveness rising in his tone. "... and some day, I'll quit making bad jokes." No, he wouldn't. "So what drew you to Fight Club?"

"I wouldn't know one way or the other. I've never taken any of your classes," Tahiri replied, countering his bad joke with one of her own -- and she wasn't going to get out of that habit any time soon, either.

She hesitated briefly. "Well, I need to stay in practice for one. I never know when they might call me home for a mission again. Besides, it's a good way to . . . work off tension when things get complicated."

"My TA keeps getting called home on missions," Tyler said, with a slow nod. He'd set the question of whether he was a good teacher or not off to the side for the time. "Ino Yamanaka. Seems from what she tells me like things have a way of getting complicated pretty often, so I'm just glad this is here to help."

"Oh, Ino, yeah, I know her," Tahiri remarked. "She's pretty good, from what I've seen. I've only had to go once so far, but I never know what might come up. And this . . . helps. Definitely."

Tyler considered this, running a hand through his hair. "Today's too crazy for me to fight," he said. "Next week, if you want a spar, I'm up for it."

Not that the girl had asked, but he could be generous like that.

"Yeah, sure," Tahiri said, giving him a considering look. "I could use a change. It's kind of insane in here right now, though. Next week, you're on."

"I'll be ready for it," he promised, and moved along, deeper into the scrim. This promised to be interesting.
