Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Evening

Tyler paced the gym barefoot as the fighters assembled. "Graduates," he began. "Students. Teachers. People who work in town. Miscellaneous others. Welcome to fight club."

"We're glad to have you here," Ghanima continued smoothly. "But if you're here, you fight. If, for some reason you cannot fight, we ask you stay towards the back. This isn't a place for voyeurism. If you want a show, go find a television."

"Ghanima, you speak my language," Tyler informed her., before turning back to the group. "Two people to a fight, fights end when someone goes limp or says stop. We are not trying to kill each other here; we're trying to train. We're trying to improve. Got questions, ask one of us." He looked at his cohort. "Anything else?"

"Rules are on the door," she said crisply, "but we're happy to answer any inquires you may have."

"Now go hit the mats or go home."

"Freak cookie incident," Zero said. "And by 'freak,' I mean 'I got distracted and forgot they were in there. My father must never know."

"I never heard a thing," Anders promised, holding one hand up. "Why is it always the desserts that do it? They keep warning you about bacon grease, but never chocolate chips."

"S'possible there was bacon in the cookies," Zero admitted. "They're supposed to be really good. I wouldn't know, 'coz of they caught fire."

"That sucks," Anders replied, genuinely sad. What? Loss of baked goods was always a tragedy. "The rest of the apartment is okay, right?"

"Oh, yeh, it was just the stove," Zero assured him. "We had a fire extinguisher on hand."

"Good old Zero. You were always more prepared than me," Anders said, running a hand through his hair. "Man, would you look at this place? It's like I don't recognize anyone. I'm not supposed to feel old yet!"

"'Course I'm prepared. With eyeliner an' markers an' everything!" Zero said happily. Yes. She would tease him for the rest of time. "I like all the mystery people." Read: It upped the chances someone with no clue what they were getting into would want to fight her.

"Think I should sucker someone into fighting you?" Anders asked. "And hey. I haven't gotten knocked out in a long, long time, thanks."

She was allowed to tease him until the end of time, though.

"Oooh," Zero said. "That could be swerval. An' you know time has nothing to do with it. Only Daisyness. And lo, you are Daisy."

"Just as long as you don't tell any of the new kids how I got that name," Anders cautioned her playfully. "And anyway, what're the odds something like that could've happened again?"

"Prolly pretty slim." Neither of them had any idea. "Don' worry. Your secret is safe with me." For a certain value of 'safe.'

"Not like I was worried," Anders said breezily. Much. He knew there were pictures out there. "And I'll never tell them about getting flooded into Special Collections either. And this is not helping me not feel old here."

"Pff," Zero said. "It's not like we're reminiscin' on the good old days. Just four years ago. Wow. Four years, really?"

"You're not helping," Anders told her. "Besides, it feels like the good old days to me. You know how weird it is to go through an entire school year, almost, and not have the campus get invaded once?"

Zero blinked at him. "No, dude, I go to USC." There was something being filmed there every other day, practically. "I nearly got hit by a New York cab once. In LA."

"And this is why they make fun of the Valley, I guess," Anders said ruefully. "I don't drive, so I don't even get into fights over parking spaces at CSUN. Was it a real New York cab?"

"Iunno, I was too busy scramblin' away. Parking, ugh, try driving a giant van!" Zero complained. "But I wouldn't give Dave up for the world," she hastened to add. "Peter won't even learn to drive."

"Can you blame him?" Anders asked. "I wouldn't either. I mean, I know how, but I'm not getting out there on those streets. You're probably safer in Dave anyway."

Zero nodded enthusiastically. "Dave is like solid steel an' you can see her from a mile away. No one tangles with her."

"Don't suppose," Anders said, picking a piece of lint off his shirt, "you've had any more breakdowns and Bigfoot rescues since that one time?"

"No, squall, I hope I don' break down. I don't think Bigfoot has a garage in LA."

"I dunno," Anders mused. "Seems like everything else is in L.A. somewhere, if you know where to look."
