Flamingo Croquet In the Park -- Thursday, All Day

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

When she first introduced him to croquet, Alice had informed him that it was better when played with flamingos. Leto had found this a little odd, but she had seemed to have experience of this, and while he hadn't quite understood how the birds were to be used, he had wanted to let her play the game the way she truly enjoyed it.

It hadn't been exactly easy to have the flamingos delivered, but on advantage of his royal birth was that he knew how to make people do what he wanted them to. So here they were: five rather confused-looking flamingos, looking out of a box.

Leto frowned a little, looking at the birds. He hoped Alice would know what to do with them. He had left her a handwavy message, asking her to join him in the park for croquet, and he expected she would find that tempting enough to show up.

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

Croquet! How lovely. Alice had dressed properly for croquet -- well, no, she hadn't, but she had dressed practically for croquet, and that was perhaps a far better proposition in any case. And she had included the hat she had acquired, from that zombie voodoo priest, because there were occasions that called for decorative, fuzzy hats, and this would seem to be one of them.

She greeted Leto with a proper curtsy, one that dipped rather low. "I received your summons, good sir."

Her false air of solemnity was quite destroyed when she glanced up again to see the box ... and promptly stared at it.

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

He gave a formal bow in response, grinning as he did so. Then he too turned towards the box.

"They are the right kind for croquet I hope," Leto replied.

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

Alice stared more before dissolving into peals of laughter.

"Flamingos," she cried, clapping her hands. "You got me flamingos? For croquet?"

Words could not express her delight. Or, if they could, she was unable to find any at the moment. Oh, this was wonderful.

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

Clearly it had been a good choice. Leto stepped close to Alice and slipped an arm around her. "But you will have to show me how to play," he said. "I'm afraid I don't quite understand."

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

Alice granted Leto a particularly bubbly sort of kiss. He had earned it.

"How on earth did you manage this?" she asked. "Flamingos. For croquet. My goodness."

She inspected the box, reaching a hand inside to see if any of the flamingos were amenable to being petted. Hoping that none of them were in the mood for an Alice's Fingers-snack.

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

He kissed her back, happily. "I ordered them," he said. It had been a little complicated, but there was no need to tell Alice all the details.

One of the flamingos stuck its head out of the box and looked around.

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

"Hello," Alice cooed delightedly, nuzzling the feathers on the top of the bird's head. "Oh, won't this be exciting. I've only tried the Queen's Croquet once, you know, and that was a very short game. She had hedgehogs for balls, and they kept rolling away. Which was probably for the best, as flamingos are not the most useful of mallets."

She had said they were proper; she didn't say they were efficient. There was a marked difference, there.

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

"They're not?" Leto asked. "And I take it that is part of the game?" He dodged an attempt by another flamingo to peck him. This one did seem to be in a bad mood.

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

"One imagines so," Alice said, frowning slightly as she reached into the box. Perhaps she could persuade the flamingo to be lifted? She would move very slowly and carefully. "No one dared ask the Queen of Hearts what on earth she thought she was doing, using flamingos and hedgehogs to play croquet. It isn't as though it works very well. Flamingos don't like to stand still."

Alice ducked, conveniently missing this flamingo's rather large beak. It didn't seem to like her, either. She would make soothing noises towards it, and see if she could change its mind on that point.

[livejournal.com profile] future_sandworm

"Unfortunately I didn't know about the hedgehogs," Leto replied. He opened the box a little more and tried to pick up a less antagonistic bird.

[livejournal.com profile] notyourpawn

"Quite all right," Alice allowed graciously. "The hedgehogs aren't nearly so interesting, and they tend to leave marks over the grass. And besides --"

She nearly had this flamingo lifted out of the box. See? They were making decided progress already.

"-- we may not get to the balls at all."

Alice should have warned him that flamingo croquet could be a terribly long sort of game.

The flamingo wriggled in his arms. "Now, how do I use the bird as a mallet?" Leto felt the need to ask.

Agnes picked what seemed to be the most docile of the flamingos that were left and started cooing at it soothingly. When it cocked its head to look at her, she bent down a little and stared it directly in the eyes. Eye. It was damn hard to command a creatures entire attention when its eyes were on opposite sides of its head.

She sure as heck was no Granny Weatherwax, but she thought she could feel it starting to come under her influence. Maybe.

Jack had some sense. Not much, mind, but enough to know that croquet with a pink bird was not the best idea.

He dashed back to the dorm and returned with something much more respectable: his dad's old tire iron. Now this was a proper mallet.

Typically, this is not something that someone saw every day. It had Valentine pausing on her random, time-consuming stroll, to tilt her head and watch, eventually dropping onto a nearby bench to sit because it was interesting enough to watch long enough that you'd want to sit down to do so.

It wasn't so much what Leto and Alice might be on that Valentine was wondering, but what the flamingos were to allow this.

Arthur had just been on a stroll through the park with Merlin for purpose that had rather more to do with his boredom in times of classlessness, and nothing else. However, the image of Leto and Alice wrestling some large pink birds into submission over what appeared to be the kind of game conjured up by a madman (and he wouldn't be that far behind there) was enough to get him to stop.

And, as it turned out, to pull out his Blackberry and finally try out that camera function.

But not before laughing himself silly in as discrete a way as he could manage. Which wasn't very, really, but it could have been worse.

Diana (with Samuel protesting under his breath) was getting some fresh air when she stumbled across the spectacle. "I need popcorn."

Agnes just had to stop and stare for a moment. "What are you doing to those poor birds?" she asked.

It was the break between the two summer terms, and Algren wasn't entirely certain what it was he ought to be doing with himself, except that his room was starting to smell so thickly of whiskey that the best idea he really had was to get outside and smell real air while he left a window open to let it ventilate.

Nice, real air. Though the park. The nice, sane...

What in the world were those students doing?

"... I do not ask. I do not ask, and then I don't get an answer. I don't get an answer, and I can pretend I haven't just seen what I think I'm seeing."

He cleared his throat. He was going to regret this.

"What in the world are the two of you doing?"

Angela was only really passing to make a stop in to chat to Peyton, but this was one thing she just had to linger and stare at. Had to.

Because that? Was weird.

Okay, now that was cool! Murdock had to stop and watch for a bit on his way into work. Who cared if he was a wee bit late? Not everyday you see someone whacking balls with birds!

Jack...just stared. Stared and stared and then stared some more.

They were trying to play a game with wildlife. Who were not cooperating. Understandably.

Irulan was out for a walk, it was wonderful day and expected it to go without incident. Really, she should know better when it comes to Fandom. And she should know better when it came to her stepson.

Who, it seems, is being pecked on the head by that pink avian creature.
