As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

The food attracted Bod's attention once he got over the decorations. He picked up a few small things to snack on and grabbed a cup of punch before wandering around the area, still glancing at the decorations every so often.

"I don't think I've ever seen so much pink," Jacob said as he grabbed himself a cup as well. "Or glitter."

"Is it always supposed to be this...loud?" asked Bod, making a face. "I feel like I might be covered in glitter just by looking around too much."

"I think they're trying to go so much over the top that it's acceptable?" Jacob guessed. He had no idea. "I don't want to know who came up with this."

"I wasn't even sure I'd see you here," said Bod, grinning a little now. "I didn't know you were a fan of Valentine's Day, Jacob."

Jacob rolled his eyes. "As much as you seem to be," he pointed out. "Did you bring a date?"

"I don't know that many girls." That was a no. "I told Warren I'd throw him into something so we could entertain ourselves since we both lacked dates. Did you bring someone?"

"No," he said with a shake of his head. He wasn't entirely sure why not. Okay, maybe he did but that meant he needed to think a lot more about it than he cared to right now. "And you only need to know one girl to take her to the dance, so that's not an excuse."

"I didn't ask anyone," he said, fixing Jacob with a look. "I didn't think it was my place and I wasn't comfortable asking someone to something I've never been to before myself. Dances are new things for me."

Jake shrugged, which was as much as an apology that he hadn't known or at least an indication of it. Now that Bod said it, it kind of made sense. "Fair enough," he said, glancing around. "So do you think you're going to try the whole dancing thing? Or are you just watching and hanging out?"

"I don't know," he said, peering at the dance floor. "Didi said she'd save me a dance but considering I've never danced before, not this type at least, I might see if I can make an excuse so I don't hurt her feet."

Jacob laughed. "Don't worry, she assured me I was the only one she'd attack with her heels if I stepped on her toes," he told Bod. "So I think you're safe if you just warn her upfront."

"Are you that bad a dancer, Jacob?" teased Bod, sounding amused.

"Bad? No, but it isn't like I'm a great one either," he said. "Accidents happen." And there was a lot of Jacob to stand on someone.

"You've danced before?" Bod actually sounded slightly surprised. "Previous school functions?"

Jacob laughed. "Yeah, they forced it on us to learn. It's okay," he said.

"Forced to learn?" Bod repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Asking you to demonstrate is going to be denied, isn't it?"

"You bet your ass it is," Jacob snorted and he motioned towards the dance floor. "There's plenty of teaching cases right over there. Just don't do what the frog does."

"Is the frog doing it wrong?" asked Bod, glancing towards the dance floor and the frog in question. "I couldn't tell either way."

"Maybe not for a frog," Jacob allowed, "but you'd look pretty weird doing that."

"I like to think I have better coordination than a frog," he said, confident of that fact. "Are you planning on dancing with someone else besides Didi?"

Jacob faked a gasp. "Why, Bod. I had no idea you wanted to dance with me."

It was very hard to keep from laughing.

"Oh, Jacob, you're not my type," said Bod, letting him down easy. "So, sorry to break your heart, but I'm not asking you to dance."

"Damn, you're cruel," Jacob sighed. "You ruined my Valentine. I'm not sure I'll ever get over that."

"Want me to dump some glitter on your head?" offered Bod, trying not to smirk.
