As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

He smiled. "I'm here with Alice," he replied, and it was obvious that he considered her good company.

Jack honestly hadn't thought much of Alice the few times they'd crossed paths, but if she made Leto happy, so be it.

"Ah," he said. "It seems to be a good dance, even if I'm not in the mood for it. It's our last except prom, isn't it?"

Well, she was perhaps not the easiest of people to understand.

"I believe it is," Leto nodded. "So I'm sorry this woman has ruined it for you. Is there no one else to distract you?"

Jack almost said I don't want anyone else before he realized how ridiculous that would sound and looked about the room. Marking people off with his finger, he softly said, "Ugly, taken, taken and ugly, doesn't date men, taken, dull ..." Hmmm. There was one corner with some potential. "I could perhaps scrounge someone up."

He was just going to get in a good sulk first.

Leto assumed that Jack cared about the woman who had stood him up - either that or he was quite sensitive to being abandoned.

"I'm sure it would make the evening a little more enjoyable, and you'd make someone else happy too." He wouldn't have minded the company himself if he hadn't had Alice.

"So really it'd only be generous of me," Jack said, a tiny smile crossing his face. "I'll be looking for a friend."

"A friend is always a good thing." Leto smiled back. "So, what did you think of the club meeting?"

Jack had learned more about Merlin than he ever wanted to know, but he'd been specifically asked not to share that.

"It wasn't bad," he said. "It was interesting hearing how different people from different backgrounds think about ... all of this."

And Leto knew as much as he wanted to about Merlin, so he wouldn't have wanted to know that anyway. Although he wouldn't have been surprised, either.

"Yes, and that was what I hoped for," he replied.

Well, no, it wasn't surprising in the least, just -- oversharing.

"Same here," he said. "It's a chance to meet people., and I never object to that."

"I rarely do either," Leto agreed, rather cheerfully.
