As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

Mat let out a low whistle at her outfit and nodded. "Count on it."

Elena spun around to give him the full view, and, okay, blushed. Only a little.

"This dress almost makes me look tall," she said confidently. "Got any exciting prospects for the night?"

"I think I just met it," he said, winking.

"Lucky me," Elena grinned. "I'm a cheap date. You don't even have to get me drunk."

"That would have to wait until later in the evening, anyway, if I'm recalling the dances correctly," Mat replied.

"We could always spike it early," Elena suggested. "Get everyone wasted in the first half-hour, watch the fun commence."

Watching drunk people would never stop being amusing.

Mat glanced toward the adults. "Give them a bit to get bored."

"I hate being baby-sat," Elena grumbled. "Shame we can't mess with them instead."

"I'd skip the man in the pajamas," Mat said. "He's bloody mad."

"Oh, him," Elena said, nodding. "I've heard that about him. Reno found it very amusing, for some reason."

Reno was amused by inappropriate things on a regular basis, so.

"Was Reno also insane?" Mat asked.

"Yes," Elena said. That did seem to be the extent of it. "He also really enjoys fucking with people."

Or taking pictures of his ballsack stuck on other people's stuff.

"That seems to be a popular hobby around here," Mat said with a laugh.

"It's certainly easy to do," Elena mused. "You can confuse the hell out of newbies just by telling them what really goes on here. It doesn't even take effort."

"You can also make up skills that you don't have and they'll believe you," Mat said. "Did you know I could fly, for instance?"

He couldn't.

"Impressive," Elena laughed. "Of course, I'm actually a thousand-year-old witch. I should turn people into toads."

Really. Except not.
