As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

"Better than being someone else," Elena said, "which isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility, here. And thanks. I decided to go for elegant instead of trampy, for once."

No, really, it had been a hard call. Short and to-the-point versus long and silvery and flowing. Somehow, the latter had won.

"Suits you," he assured her, stepping back to take in the whole picture. "How've you been? Making all the men on the island putty in your hands?"

"I wish," she sighed. "I've been ... I don't know. Starting to get maudlin about this whole graduation thing. Which is stupid, since we just got here, right?"

"Mmm." He nodded and then said, "I've actually got another year left so I'm more feeling restless. No idea what the fuck I'm gonna do next year. You got plans for post graduation?"

"Probably going back home," Elena said, frowning at the idea. "It's messy. But then, most things are."

She shook her head. "Are you thinking about skipping out early? Getting on with whatever you're going back to?"

"Nah, probably not," he said, shaking his head. "Not much a fan of home, family or not. I got tossed here because I'd fucked up there. Not really feeling a return there. I dunno, I might stick around. Actually not so bad here. And people seem to like my talent for jerkiness."

"Maybe you're an acquired taste," Elena teased, offering him a grin. "Cocky son-of-a-bitch, who is even as good a lay as he thinks he is."

"Well, I don't like to brag," he said but tugged on his collar confidently anyway, looking all the cocky son of a bitch part. Couldn't let people down, now could he? "But I haven't heard any complaints either. I don't leave anyone unsatisfied."

"Full marks from this side," Elena laughed. "And I'm a harsh grader on that front."

It was like some people needed a map or something.

"Oooh, going the teacher route," he said, nodding impressively. "Way to put some pretty pictures in my head."

"I usually go for the naughty schoolgirl thing," Elena laughed. "Pigtails and a uniform. It's very cute, you should see it some time."

"I should, should I?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow and smirking. "I think it would depend on just naughty you are."

"How naughty do you want me to be?" Elena asked, biting her lower lip and attempting a pout.

Alex knew he was living dangerously here but he couldn't help himself. Flirting was still allowed. "I don't think you can be as naughty as I want you to be."

"No?" Elena asked, moving a little closer into his personal space. For her part, she didn't know anything had changed, and assumed it was entirely safe to flirt. "I could certainly try."

"I don't doubt that for one second," he said, laughing a bit. "I could challenge you to just about anything, express doubt and you'd try and prove me wrong."
