As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

Chuck rolled his eyes. "Of course you did. You ever worry that you won't stop growing and you'll be one of those weird circus giants?"

"I'm not going to be a circus giant," Sam said, rolling his eyes. "I'm going to be tall enough that no one will mess with me."

"It doesn't matter how tall you get, I won't stop messing with you," Chuck told him. "You're just not that intimidating."

"I'm not going to intimidate you, I like you," Sam said. "Although I suppose if you never, ever stop messing with me, I might like you a little less."

"Oh but it's my way of being affectionate," Chuck teased. "I'm just not the compliments and hugs sort of friend."

"Oh yes, I feel very loved and adored," Sam said dryly. "Are you planning on spiking the punch, or are you just going to let that happen naturally?"

"I plan on leaving before that," he said. Chuck pulled a flask of scotch out of his pocket. "Besides, I always bring my own."

It only took a second of thought for Sam to ask, "Can I have a sip?"

Chuck looked super surprised for a moment before nodding and handing over the flask. "If I didn't know you had that tattoo I'd be getting all Latin on you."

He forgot which word to say exactly, but he'd make something up. It was all the same or something.

"It's been kind of a long weekend already," Sam said, taking a long sip before passing the flask back to Chuck. "It's good to know you'd look out for a possessed me though."

"You Winchesters are rubbing off on me." Not dirty.

"You wish," Sam said, smirking a little. "At least, not with Dean gone."

Chuck raised an eyebrow. "Did you just turn what I said into dirty innuendo?"

"Maybe," Sam said innocently. "You can't tell me you weren't thinking it."

"Believe me, I was thinking it. I just didn't expect you to say it," he said. "Were you drinking before the dance or something?"

"No, I wasn't. It was tempting," Sam admitted. "But no. I just don't give as much of a crap in general, I guess."

That kind of worried Chuck a little, but he really was in no position to judge someone on deciding not to give a crap. "Yes, well, I suppose I can't blame you for that. Being uptight all the time must have been exhausting."

"I'm not always uptight," Sam insisted. "At least, I don't think I am. I didn't used to be."

"Okay, fine, I take back the all the time part of it," Chuck said. Seemed to him that he was the one always pushing Sam to have fun, but whatever.

"I got high with you once. That totally counts," Sam points out, like it made all the difference.

"That counts as me pushing you to have fun," he said. "Which I don't mind doing. It's fun when you finally give in to me."

"Maybe it's how I get you back for making fun of me," Sam said. "Considering how hard you have to push sometimes."

"I take it as a challenge rather than punishment," Chuck said. "A very, very difficult challenge."
