Valentine's Day Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening [8pm on]

As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever.  Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours.  But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls.  Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it.  Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy.  Which hopefully would not be literally set afire.  The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

[Up early for timezones.  Wait for the OCD or I will STAB YOU, OKAY? is up! And thre'll be a second post up later if this one gets insanely large (well, hell, why even say 'if')]

Karla inhaled deeply. "It is," she said happily. "I made it home in time for the Desperation Day dance," she said that with no irony whatsoever, "get to come with George, get to see all my friends again, get to have conversations with people who aren't trying to one-up me in conversation...Dinah, I missed you. And your lovely, lovely sanity."

Giggling, Dinah said, "Nicest compliment of the night! Seriously. And Desperation Day?" She grinned. "That's... fairly accurate." And a good reason to leave early, really. She'd proven to herself she could show up; no big reason to stay.

"George was telling me about it," Karla explained. "He learned about it from Dean Stinson. It sounds a bit, well, weird, but..." she shrugged. "When in Scelt."

Dinah facepalmed. "It's Valentine's Day," she said, muffled from behind her hand. "It's supposed to be a day to celebrate love and lovers."

"Right, that's tomorrow," Karla said, nodding sagely. "Tonight is Desperation Day, when people try to find other people to spend Valentine's Day with. Right?"

Karla looked very proud of herself for knowing that.

"Not ... officially." And any miniscule temptation Dinah had had to do anything like that had evaporated now, poof. "Although I guess it does happen a lot."

Sorry, Dinah. Karla was simply parroting back Dean Stinson's explanation.

"Is that why there's a dance?" she asked. "To make it easier for people to do that?"

Karla: not helpful.

"Probably. That's why I'll be leaving early now," Dinah said dryly.

"You are?" Karla asked, looking concerned. "Are you okay? Just not feeling the dance, or--?"

[Wtf, LJ? Post my stuff!]

[heee]

"Just not feeling it at all," Dinah said. "I'm here, it's nice, I danced with Leto, I'll hang out to say hi to people, but... yeah. The romance, it's dead. For me, anyway."

Karla glanced around the room then back to Dinah and nodded. If she happened to catch a whiff of the Dark Eco that infused someone's psychic scent while she was glancing, well, who knew?

"I understand," Karla said. "Do you want me to go with you?" she asked. "I could talk to George...he's probably understand...we could talk if you wanted?"

Dinah's face melted into a smile, and she stepped forward to hug Karla. "Naaah. You're having a good time with George. No way I'm breaking that up tonight. Catch me up later, and we'll talk, though."

She'd noticed that another person was completely missing, and felt that a boy and his flying squirrel deserved a visit. She hugged Karla again, then stepped back. "Happy Desperation Night, Karla. Just not for you, you know?"

Karla hugged Dinah back. "No worries about me," she said. "I was desperate to come home. Now that I am? I'm okay with taking everything else as it comes." She gave Dinah an understanding smile and added, "We'll talk soon. I promise."
